Cultural Week

República Dominicana

This term for Cultural week, we explored the sunny and beautiful Caribbean island of the Dominican Republic. Students learnt about its rich culture, iconic landmarks, traditional cuisine, and even learned to dance a bit of Merengue, a traditional music genre originating from the island.

During this week, the 5/6 students not only learned about the Dominican Republic but also created a travel itinerary with a budget of $6000. They researched the best flights, accommodations, dining options, as well as six must-visit landmarks, and travel insurance. Stay tuned, teachers—we already have our next holiday planned!

The 1/2 students compared the Dominican Republic with other countries, crafting impressive pieces of writing that highlighted the differences and similarities in weather, currency, food, and other key aspects as well as creating an amazing mural landscape. They also explored folklore stories such as 'Las Nimitas' and 'Ratón Pérez,' the famous mouse in Latin American culture responsible for leaving money for children who lose their teeth.

The 3/4's students investigated the impact of Spanish colonization on the Dominican Republic. They created infographics showcasing the most important aspects of the island and were thrilled to make delicious 'Paletas de Coco.' Additionally, they crafted clay 'Las muñecas Limés', faceless dolls that symbolize the Dominican blend of African, European, and Aboriginal identities—a legacy of various colonizations.

Our Foundation students learned about the Dominican Republic's flag and notable tourist spots. They created their own passports, documenting the places they "visited" on the island. Students practiced vocabulary such as 'Ir a la playa,' 'hace calor,' 'jugar béisbol,' and made finger puppets dressed in traditional Dominican attire.

Alongside these fantastic learning experiences, students across all grade levels spent time creating their costumes for our school concert in September.

I hope you enjoyed our Cultural Week Open Learning as much as I did. It was a wonderful display of creativity and learning from our students.

¡Felices vacaciones para todes!
