Library News

We are thrilled to share the exciting events that unfolded within the welcoming walls of our library recently. With a focus on diversity, inclusivity, and intellectual engagement, we celebrated two significant occasions: IDAHOBIT Day and NAIDOC Week.

Firstly, on May 17th, we commemorated the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Interphobia, and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT Day). Our library transformed into a vibrant hub of acceptance and understanding, adorned with colourful displays showcasing the rich tapestry of LGBTQ+ history, culture, and activism. Through literature, art, and informational materials, we aimed to raise awareness and foster conversations that promote respect and equality for all.

Following IDAHOBIT Day, we seamlessly transitioned into NAIDOC Week, celebrating the history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Our library embraced the spirit of reconciliation and cultural appreciation with captivating displays featuring historical timelines, literature, and traditional knowledge. It was a time of reflection, learning, and honouring the enduring legacy of Australia's First Nations.

But the excitement didn't stop there! Amidst the cultural celebrations, we also hosted the highly anticipated chess finals. After two terms of intense competition involving over 100 students, the chess grand final brought together the brightest minds and strategic geniuses from our student body (Mihindi Adimali Kankanamge of Yr 8 vs Aon Dutta of Yr 11). The tension was palpable as competitors squared off in intense matches, each move a testament to their skill and determination.

In the end, it was Mihindi Adimali Kankanamge of Year 8 who emerged victorious, demonstrating exceptional mastery of the game and a keen strategic mind. Her triumph was celebrated by peers and spectators alike, a testament to the power of dedication and intellect. She will be awarded with her golden "Chess Champion" badge for her uniform soon and both finalists will also receive a canteen voucher.

Additionally, we're excited to welcome Sam Taylor, our newest team member, who joins us on Mondays and Fridays with a passion for literature and a dedication to fostering community within our library.

As we look forward to future events and gatherings, we invite you to join us in continuing to foster an environment of inclusivity, curiosity, and respect within our beloved library.
