AFL GALA DAY REPORT! Thursday 13th June 2024!

The cold wind blew as the sun rose on what was to be a very busy day on the SoGS sports calendar! As I headed to school with the sun desperately trying to peek through the clouds, I could only imagine the anticipation and excitement that 35 of our students were holding onto.

The announcement went out at 9.05am - “Could all Footy Gala students please come to the 5/6 area?” The excitement lifted from bubbling to exuberant!

Mrs John, Mrs Grace and myself along with Nick (Coach/Parent/Master of Football) loaded onto the team bus and headed to Jacana Reserve. On arrival we were greeted by David (another Coach/Parent/Master of Football) at the ground. The Open team headed to oval one and the girls team headed to oval two.

Unfortunately (but luckily) due to our bus running late, our first game was changed to a bye which gave both of our teams enough time to prepare, warm up and listen to both their coaches for an inspiring and uplifting speech that would set the tone for the day.

Under the excellent leadership of Nick (Parent Helper), the SoGS Open AFL team found themselves up against the reigning 2023 champions in Westmeadows.  What started out as a close contest soon turned out to be a significant loss first up for the SoGS open team. The team quickly regathered and played the remainder of their games, winning each one convincingly. The open team finished the day with four wins and one loss which unfortunately was not enough to send them through to the Woodlands division round.

The SoGS Girls AFL team, found themselves under the patient and fantastic guidance of David (Parent Helper) with support from Mrs John and Mrs Grace. What we witnessed was beyond anything I could ever put into words.

An inspiring speech by David ignited a gutsy and dedicated display for all of the games the girls played in. A mixed bag of results (2 wins and 3 losses) ensued for the girls but nothing prepared any of the spectators of what they witnessed in the last game of the day - after the first game where the Girls unfortunately could not find the big sticks, they rallied together and with David’s inspiring message at the forefront of their minds - the SoGS girls won by a staggering 9 goals!

We can say with confidence that the football future looks bright at SoGS.

Congratulations to both teams and again a big thank you to David and Nick for helping out and supporting the teams along with Mrs John and Mrs Grace for helping us on the day.

We also cannot forget to give a big thankyou to the parents and families that came down to support their children in what was a memorable and exciting day for all.

Go SoGS!
