2024 3-12 Athletics Carnival Newsletter

The 2024 Athletics Carnival was a resounding success, bringing together students, staff and families for a day filled with athletic prowess, spirited competition and community bonding. Held on 31st May at Casey Fields, the event showcased a wide range of track and field events, highlighting the diverse talents of our students and fostering a sense of unity and school pride.

One of the most remarkable aspects of this year's carnival was the weather. In the days leading up to the event, there were concerns about possible rain showers and high winds. However, much to everyone's delight, the skies cleared and the sun shone brightly, providing the perfect backdrop for a day of sporting excellence and fun.

This year’s carnival also introduced a new scoring system, adding an extra layer of excitement and strategy to the competition. Students and staff quickly adapted to the changes, demonstrating flexibility and enthusiasm. The updated system aimed to provide a more balanced and inclusive approach to scoring, ensuring that every participant's effort contributed to their house's overall success.

Students had an amazing time participating in various events, from sprints to long jump and shot put. The energy was infectious, with cheers and encouragement resonating from the stands. Some highlights of the day include 15 records being broken or set, some notable mentions are:

Josh A, Lakeside College Record for Boys High Jump: 1.73m

Grace O, Lakeside College Record for Girls High Jump: 1.38m

In an exciting culmination of the day’s events, Toomuc emerged victorious, capturing their first athletics shield since 2012. The team's dedication, hard work, and sportsmanship were evident throughout the carnival, making their win a well-deserved triumph. Congratulations to Toomuc for breaking the long drought and reclaiming the top spot!

The competition was fierce, but in the end, the standings were as follows:

1st Place: Toomuc

2nd Place: Jamieson

3rd Place: Hessel

4th Place: Bunurong

The 2024 Athletics Carnival was a celebration of our students' school spirit, camaraderie, and incredible talents. The success of the day was a testament to the hard work of the organisers, the enthusiasm of the participants and the support of all of those involved.

As we look back on this fantastic event, we eagerly anticipate the next opportunity to come together and create more memorable moments. Congratulations to all the participants, and a special shout-out to Toomuc for their outstanding achievement!

Lakeside Junior Girls AFL Give it a Red Hot Go!

On a chilly, but cheerfully sunny morning on June 17 our Lakeside girls took on two strong sides with matches against Kambrya and Koo Wee Rup secondary colleges at Sweeney Reserve, Berwick.

In the first half of both matches the girls battled hard and repelled several attacks on goal, being only a couple of goals down at the main break (the only break!) Some great passages of play with linking handball and clean ball use saw superior play in the midfield at times in the matches. Some great clearances were achieved with sidestepping and sharp turns out of the pack by some of our players who were definitely matching the best of the other teams in skill and drive up the ground, particularly out of half-back.

Both of the opposing sides had quite a few experienced footballers which allowed them to prevail in the end with a 5-1 goal result in both cases, but our students made the other teams earn those goals.

In the second match, we were well on top with our ruck duels and increasingly winning the stop pages up to the final whistle. A sterling effort from our team, for which all can be very proud.

Primary Girls AFL

On Friday 21st of June, 16 players from Year 4, 5 and 6, along with their 2 amazing Year 8 coaches headed over to Toomuc Reserve for a Girls AFL round robin competition. This was the first time Lakeside College had participated in the Girls AFL competition.

The weather was wild and windy, but after training at lunchtime every day in the week before, the girl's skills and energy were bubbling! All day, and in each match every member of the team supported each other with many handballs, strong accurate kicks, verbal encouragement, fearless tackling and truly amazing energy and effort.

The team played 3 matches, one of which was won through a stream of 4 goals in a row during the second half. To close out the day, the girls came second in the Officer District Competition and walked back to school with great plans for attending next year's competition, with our first year's experience a fun and very positive one.

PRIMARY DISTRICT WINTER LIGHTNING PREMIERSHIP

On Friday 7th June, selected students from Years 5 & 6 represented Lakeside College at the Officer District Lightning Premiership. This round robin qualifying event hosted the winter sports of AFL 9’s football, netball, soccer and tball.

Supported by our Year 10 Sports Coaching students, who have been closely involved in training the teams throughout term two during timetabled group sport, it was a big day for all involved.

Please enjoy our student recounts of the teams participating.

T-BALL

T-Ball was an amazing sport for lighting prem and luckily I chose T-Ball. We had a really good team so we almost won all our matches except one which we lost 9-15. We all did really good in our matches and most of us got home runs. We did great because our coaches [Philly, Jess and Ella]. We were really proud of ourselves and got second just behind Officer PS.

BOYS SOCCER

It was a good experience for the team. We won 2 games and lost 2. It was hard but we got to the semi-finals. Our Coaches were pretty good, they kept us motivated and pumped up for what was to come.

It was awesome and enjoyable for the 5s and 6s. I hope the grade 6s absolutely enjoyed their last year of lightning prem.

AFL 9’s

AFL nines was really good, we were allowed to tackle despite originally being told it was going to be touch footy. We won 1 game and also lost 2 games. We had a pretty good time and our coaches were actually really fun and they were really nice to us. In the end though we managed to still come third before Kurrun PS. 2nd was Orchard Park and Pakenham Primary School came 1st. Most of the team tried their best on lighting premiership footy.

GIRLS NETBALL

Friday was fun, we started our games around 12 and we played against 4 other schools. We unfortunately lost the first 3 and our last one was a draw from 3-3.

I can tell all of us tried our hardest and it was fun since we ended up getting candy from another school.

This Winter Lightning Prem will of course be very remarkable.

MIXED NETBALL

On Friday we went to the stadium, we played against three teams and beat all of them by 20 points and got into the finals, where we were very close to losing. But in the end, we beat the team by 6 points and became the champions. The year 5s and 6s both worked so hard and it paid off!

Winning and having lots of fun was a memorable experience for all us.

Last Friday we went to the mixed netball winter lightning premiership. We played against a couple of teams and beat all of them by a lot, so we made it to the finals. It was really kind of the other team which even though we were a dominant team they still said “good game” at the end.

Overall it was fun, engaging and a good win.
