The Reporting Term

Across the state Term 2 for teachers is always known as the reporting term. Schools are required to formally report student achievement and progress to parents/carers at least twice per school year for each student enrolled at school.

  • The report must be a written report (print or digital) in an accessible form and be easy for parents/carers to understand.
  • Schools must report directly against the Victorian Curriculum F-10 achievement standards.
  • Both student achievement and progress must be included in the report.
  • Opportunities must be provided for parents/carers and students to discuss the school report with teachers and/or school leaders.

Our semester reports are created on Compass and released to parents on the second last Friday of this term. The following week we designate two afternoons and one extended evening on the Tuesday for parents to discuss their child’s progress with class teachers and specialists. Class conferences are 15 minutes in length, whilst specialist meetings are limited to 5 mins and are capped at 2 meetings per family to allow all families an opportunity. In more recent years in the middle and upper school, students have become a more active part of Three-Way-Conferences joining the meeting at some stage to lead the Conference as part of developing their student agency and voice. Students in Foundation – Yr 2 prepare a reflection piece that teachers share with parents at their Two-Way Parent-Teacher Conference. A lot of effort and practise goes into preparing for these conferences by teachers and students. In the next newsletter I will provide a role description for each participant in the three-way-conference process.

English and Maths are reported on every semester, as well as Social and Personal Capability. Specialist areas are assessed each semester, excluding Japanese and apart from our Foundation students who won’t receive an achievement grade at this stage of the year in these subjects. All students, however F-Yr 6, will receive an Effort and Behaviour grade for all specialist areas, as well as an Effort grade for English, Mathematics and Classroom Behaviour. This year for the first time, we have also introduced a grade for Yard Behaviour.

Students in Year 1-6 will be able to see learning growth whenever the learning area was last reported on. Having said that, this year all schools in Victoria have translated to Mathematics 2.0. The biggest change that parents will notice is that there will only be a single aggregated grade given for Mathematics, as opposed to previous years where this subject was broken into strands. That means no growth will be shown for Mathematics until the end of year report.
