 Mathematical Fluency

Did you know your child completes 5 minutes of maths fluency practice each day?

At Sacred Heart, we're bringing cognitive science to life in our classrooms. Research tells us that students need multiple exposures and regular repetition to truly master skills. That’s why every class dedicates 5 minutes each day to focused maths fluency.

In the early years, this looks like fun, hands-on number games, call-and-response activities, and basic addition and subtraction practice. For our older students, we use Times Tables Rock Stars to build quick recall of multiplication and division facts.

This independent time in our maths lessons is all about developing automaticity in the four key operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

Since introducing this fluency focus, we've seen fantastic results! On average, our students are correctly answering over 13,000 questions each week on Times Tables Rock Stars. We're proud to be building confident, capable mathematicians—our next maths superstars!

Maths in classroom this week

Our classrooms have been buzzing with energy as Maths comes to life through fun and engaging lessons. Students have shown strong engagement in various areas of Maths, and this has been reflected in their assessments, with many demonstrating significant growth in automatic recall and the application of key skills.

Take a look at what our students had to say about their learning in Maths:

Prep: We are learning about patterns and shapes. We have had a lot of fun exploring making pictures with shapes.

Grade 1: We have been learning about subtraction.

Grade 2: We have been learning about regrouping and how to make different numbers.

Grade 3: We are learning about algonthms, patterns, mulitples, halving and doubling.

Grade 4:We are learning about data, surveys and graphs.

Grade 5: We are identifying chance outcomes and naming them as fractions, while conducting chnce experiements.

Grade 6: We are learning about probability, statisitics and conducting investiagtions to go with our new knowledge.

Maths at Home Recommendation

Looking for easy ways to support your child’s maths learning at home?

Quick, fun activities can make a big difference—and they don’t need to be complicated!

🧱 Build and Compare 🧱Grab some blocks, LEGO, or any small objects. You and your child each build a tower using a handful of pieces. Then, compare:

  • Who used more?
  • How many more?
  • What if we added two more to the smaller tower—would it be the same?

This simple game encourages counting, comparing numbers, and using maths language in everyday play.

A little hands-on practice like this goes a long way in building number sense and confidence!

"Maths is everywhere—you just have to know where to look."

Maths isn’t just something that happens at school—it’s woven into daily life, from setting the table to spotting patterns in nature. When children engage with maths in meaningful, playful ways at home, they begin to see it not as a subject, but as a way of thinking.

Whether it’s solving a puzzle, comparing snack portions, or exploring tools like NumBots, every small moment of practice adds up. These regular experiences help children deepen their understanding, build problem-solving skills, and develop a lifelong confidence with numbers.
