Dear Sacred Heart Kew Families,
They say ‘measure twice - cut once’. I think I remember hearing that back when I was in Prep? Why does this saying often pop into my head when I enter the School Hall building site?
I thought that it was 'high time' I provided an update to everyone on the School Hall renovations. I know many of you have been curious about progress, even my ‘Project Manager’ cousin has been inquiring lately. As the tradies say, ‘let’s hope my effort isn't a Friday job’.
We’ve seen many different people wearing hard hats (of different colours) venturing in and out of the School Hall building over the last couple of months (since my last update mid March). Bricky’s, Sparky’s, Chippy’s, just to name a few. Like you, many of us have been wondering, what have they all been doing?
The good news is that our School Hall Building renovations continue to take shape. Things have really begun to ‘open right up’. As you can see from the photos below, the First Floor Balcony bones have been assembled and the doorway into the upstairs middle classroom has been knocked through. The lift shaft is now complete, with the initial stages of our ground floor internal ramp coming along nicely.
There has been a mysterious ‘underground’ leak which appears to not be coming from any of our water sources on our property. This could be entering from across the road, but this leak doesn’t appear to be impacting the building, which is a positive. It appears to be coming in off Cotham Rd, so Yarra Valley Water might need to sort that one out. At this stage, we’re all on track, despite this mysterious leak.
The building is certainly ‘not going to build itself’, and with a few more busy months ahead, we look forward to continued progress, and sharing further photo updates when possible. The concreting of the internal and external ramps will commence shortly, along with the electrical fit out inside, with plastering the next pivotal step. They say 'you can’t stop progress', even if you’re a mysterious water leak (which is lucky).

Earlier this week I had the privilege to visit the Victorian State Parliament with our two School Captains, Emily and Freddie. I saw building blocks of a different kind, the humble beginnings of our young leaders developing their voice, building their leadership skills, as they joined with other Primary School leaders from Jess Wilson’s Electorate of Kew.
Both Emily and Freddie spoke with passion and poise as they presented their issue that was important to them and their peers. Emily spoke about ‘Safety on Footpaths and Roads’ and Freddie spoke about ‘Homelessness and Poverty’. Our 2025 School Captains represented Sacred Heart Kew with grace and aplomb, delivering their short speeches with confidence and ease.
After all Primary School leaders had spoken in the Legislative Assembly (Lower House), we received a guided tour of the Legislative Council (Upper House), Parliamentary Library and Queen’s Hall. Turns out, currently, there are also a few Bricky’s Sparky’s and Chippy’s onsite at State Parliament too, with a few renovation jobs in the pipeline there. Just like our School Hall renovations, all things seemed to be humming along quite nicely. There were no ‘Bodge Jobs’ that I came across.
Wishing everyone a lovely King’s Birthday Long Weekend.
Kind Regards,
Ed Weekes
School Principal
