The Humanities

The Bible makes clear that God works out His purpose for humankind through History, and that the process of change in human society over time is intentional and is part of God’s will and purpose for His people. An understanding of God’s overall plan for salvation is the framework within which the study of specific periods of History is undertaken. Furthermore, Christians are encouraged to be good stewards of their resources in everyday life. The Commerce course aims to help students reflect on their own responsibilities as a consumer and consider what it means to take a Christian ‘world view’ in relation to business and economics in the global economy.

In the Year 7 General Studies curriculum, students are first introduced to the various subjects which comprise the study of Humanities. Through the study of History, students develop historical understanding as they learn about the ancient civilisations of Australia and China. Emphasis is placed on exploring key groups and their cultures, as well as developing an appreciation of how the world and its people have changed, and the significant continuities that exist to the present day.

Through the study of Geography, students learn to analyse and understand the places that make up our world as they explore topics such as Water in the World. As they study Civics and Citizenship, students are challenged to become active and informed citizens who participate in and sustain Australia’s democracy as they learn about Government and Democracy. Finally, through the study of Economics and Business, students explore and observe the characteristics of entrepreneurs and successful businesses.
