Mathematics

Mathematics is a way to describe the numerical and spatial nature, as well as the order, magnitude and beauty of God’s creation and hence the nature of God.

The study of mathematics enables us to:

• Have insights into God’s constancy

• Gain a perspective on God’s infinite domain

• Have a language with which to describe deductions, patterns and relationships via mathematical operations

• Record and express the laws and relationships of the Universe which God created through logic, theorems and proofs.

God gives us the ability to think mathematically. Students will improve their own mental clarity, develop their ability to problem solve, grow an appreciation for correctness of procedure and accuracy and learn perseverance in difficult tasks. It assists us in our God-given stewardship of the earth.

Mathematics in Years 7, 8 and 9 follows the curriculum as specified in the Victorian Curriculum. At the College, most students undertake their studies in a ‘Core Mathematics’ class. Some students, however, may be invited to participate in a ‘Small Maths’ group. The ‘Small Maths’ group at Years 7 and 8 caters for students who require additional support in their Mathematical studies. The teaching and learning program in this course, although covering the same basic structure as the ‘Core’ classes allows for more focus on the foundational concepts.

At any time during a year (or between years) students may transfer between the Core and Small groups. The placement of students in the various Maths classes and streams is managed by the Maths Faculty Coordinator.
