English

Competence in language, both written and spoken, is of vital importance if students are to become effective communicators. Christian students also need to develop critical language skills, not only to communicate their faith and promote justice, but also to discern the opinions of others and develop their sense of empathy and compassion. An empathic and compassionate world view is central to a meaningful engagement with society and can be a powerful motivator in the incarnation of God’s kingdom.
In addition, through the study of literature and the media, students encounter the complexities of a fallen world in need of God’s redemption, and unique glimpses of hope and grace, providing a model for future action and reflection. Students learn to appreciate the beauty and power of great works of literature; to appreciate the craft of writing as an art form inspired and gifted by the Creator.
At Year 7, English is part of the General Studies subject. In General Studies, students begin to have a critical appreciation for texts, and to express themselves analytically. Receptive and expressive skills are sharpened in both English and the Humanities.
