Principal's Message

Dear Parents/ Carers,
With the Parent / Teacher interviews scheduled to take place soon, it is important that you have the opportunity to prepare for these so as to gain the maximum benefit.
Below I have listed things that you can do BEFORE, DURING and AFTER the interview to ensure that your child receives a consistent message from both home and school.
BEFORE THE INTERVIEW
- Read through the Report and become familiar with the headings used.
- Write down what you are most impressed with and what you have concerns about.
- Write down any questions that you might have so you do not forget them.
- Talk to your child about the Report. Look for those positive aspects as opportunities to praise them. Ask them to talk about the Report – are there any grades or comments that they don’t understand?
Discuss possible goals that your child may have for the rest of the year. Write these down so they can be shared with the teacher.
DURING THE INTERVIEW
- Let the teacher begin the interview by talking about the strengths / areas for development that your child has.
- Ask the questions that you have written down prior to the interview taking place.
Discuss the goals that your child has mentioned for the rest of the year so the teacher is aware of what your child sees as areas for improvement.
AFTER THE INTERVIEW
- When you get home provide your child with a summary of the discussion.
- Emphasise the areas where your child is doing well before talking about areas for improvement during the second half of the year.
- Get them to write them down the areas for improvement and pin them up on the fridge or a noticeboard at home. Discuss how you can help them achieve their goals.
- During the second half of the year, check in with your child and teacher to see how they are going.
We know that all our students will perform much better when they are actively engaged in the learning process. They need to understand that education is NOT something DONE to them... rather it is a process they engage in to identify their own strengths and areas for improvement. Even our Kindergarten students have the capacity to identify what they want to get better at, and how they can do this. Let's work together to help our students understand that the School Report is not the END, rather it is the opportunity to START a whole new way of learning.
