Instrumental Music Academy Updates

Our Instrumental Music Academy is in its second year at Hazel Glen College, with two classes in Years 5 and 6. See below some updates from our students:

Year 6 Update:

We're pleased to share the latest news from our Instrumental Music Academy, where our Year 6 students have been busy mentoring the Year 5 recruits in preparation for their instrument selection at the end of Term 2. Our Year 6 musicians recently showcased their talents at open rehearsals for parents and families, as well as at both the Years 6 - 8 and Years 9 - 12 assemblies. Their performances were a testament to their hard work and dedication. We're now looking for more committed students to join the Year 6 Academy. Keep an eye out for information about mid-year applications coming in Term 2. Thank you for your continued support!

Year 5 Update:

In the vibrant world of the Instrumental Music Academy (IMA), passion for music thrives among our Year 5 and 6 students. We're thrilled to share some highlights and insights straight from the talented minds of our budding musicians. Firstly, we must celebrate a significant milestone: the Year 5 students' debut performance to the Senior Years on Harmony Day. Their dedication and enthusiasm shone through as they shared their musical talents with our school community. Now, let's delve into the heart of the IMA experience. Our academy is divided into three enriching components:

After School Ensemble: Every Thursday afternoon from 3:00 to 4:00, Year 5 and 6 students gather to play instruments, harmonise, and explore the joys of music together.
IMA Focus Lessons: Under the guidance of the magnificent Mr. Marshall, Miss Stenhouse, and Mr. King, students delve into learning new instruments and techniques, refining their skills with each session.
IMA School Classes: Here, students expand their musical knowledge, polish their concepts, and prepare for special performances while fostering leadership qualities through collaboration and support. But the IMA isn't just about music—it's about nurturing future leaders. Through cooperation and mutual assistance, our students learn invaluable teamwork and music tactics, making the IMA an enriching and spectacular experience for all involved. Now, let's talk instruments! In Term 2, our Year 5 students will begin their journey with the flute, clarinet, trumpet, and trombone, adding to the diverse array of instruments they've already explored. From the keyboard, glockenspiel, and djembe to the ukulele, guitar, cello, violin, viola, and double bass, our students are embracing every opportunity to discover their musical passions.

Student Leadership Academy

The Student Leadership Academy in the Primary Years has been an exciting and rewarding process. In total, we had over 115 applications sent through! This remarkable number speaks volumes and is truly a testament to the passion and enthusiasm that our students have for leadership. We would like to congratulate all students who applied for the Leadership Academy and those students who were successful in being appointed.

We have already hit the ground running with our Student Leadership Academy. On Wednesday 20th of March, they were treated to an inspiring and motivating session thanks to AFL Victoria. We had two Carlton Football Club players speak to the academy students. Lachlan Cowan and Jaxon Binns came along to discuss leadership qualities and the importance of having a positive impact on local communities. Our students got the chance to ask questions about leadership and the academy got a photo with the AFL players at the end of the session!

Languages At Hazel Glen College

This term our students have been very busy in Languages classes. In Mandarin, students learned about Chinese New Year and in Italian, students learned about the significance and traditions of Carnevale and Easter in Italy.

Learning about significant festivals and traditions helps promote intercultural understanding and helps facilitate communication in the language.

Year 5 Curiosity

This Term as part of the Curiosity Program, our Year 5 students explored communities and looked closely at how people are connected and the different demographics that make up communities. Over the past 3 weeks, students have worked in small groups to design a community that meets the needs of different demographics. They have applied their knowledge of geographical concepts to map their community and justify that they had met the wants and needs of the different demographics. Students then made their community come to life by using their knowledge of shapes and nets to build a 3D community.
