Junior School Mother's Day at Kambala

It was heartening to be joined by our Kambala Mothers and Carers for our annual Junior School Mother's Day breakfast. We are always about amplifying the voice of your daughters, so I cannot think of a better way to sum up the power of our mothers than in the words of our Junior School Captain Erykah Skimin:

Today we celebrate the ones who loved us first and then forever – our mothers. Today, we honour and express our gratitude to these extraordinary women. I’d like us to take a moment to reflect on the countless sacrifices and unwavering dedication that our mothers pour into every aspect of our lives. Today, we come together not only to celebrate the mothers and grandmothers who have raised us, but also to recognise the mothers and grandmothers who continue to inspire and shape our world.

If I was to make a list of all the people in the world I admire, my mother would be at the top. My mother is a confident and inspiring woman who is always there when I need her, and without a doubt is one of the most special people in my life. Only my mother has the ability to make everything better for me. Whether it's a scraped knee, a broken heart, or a shattered dream, she's always there with open arms and soothing words. My mother is my biggest cheerleader, my fiercest defender, and my most trusted confidante. Her belief in me has fueled my dreams and given me the courage to pursue them, knowing that no matter the outcome, she'll be there, loving me at every step of the way.

So thank you mothers, because as the people who have raised us and supported us in every kind of way, you are the ones who we not only need in our lives, but who we love in our lives. So, I’d like for all us Kambala students to turn and give our mothers the biggest hug, and make sure she knows that you wish her the happiest Mother’s Day ever, because she deserves it. Thank you mothers, and have a happy Mother’s Day!

ySafe Cyber Safety Session - Tuesday 7 May, 2024

On Tuesday, Mr. David Smith from ySafe conducted a session with our Year 4, 5 and 6 students.  This session covered cyber behaviours that are inappropriate such as “dissing”, “masquerading” and exclusion.  The students were presented with multiple examples of these actions and what they might look like online.

Girls were asked to role play between three friends, gaming online, in which one friend was being targeted.  In the first scenario we heard the third friend playing the role of bystander who reinforced the bullying behaviour.  The role play was then repeated with the same friend acting as an upstander who calls the friend out on the behaviour.  This was a very powerful message for the students to understand that a slight change in language can help shift the environment of a chat to a more positive place.

The girls were also given tips on what to look for to identify fake accounts and what to do if they are the victim of cyberbullying. These included:

  • Report
  • Block
  • Leave if a chat gets toxic
  • Ask an adult for help

The parent information session on Tuesday evening was well attended and well received with one parent commenting:

"Thank you so much for the terrific presentation for Kambala this evening (Tuesday) - it was really a great help and I have seen many cyber safety events as I have a daughter much older than our 12 year old but this was concise and helpful in a real-life scenario. Please pass on my thanks”
