Recycling Textiles Excursion
Our class had the wonderful opportunity to explore Good Sammy's outlet warehouse with guidance from the Fiber Economy team. Fiber Economy is a Perth-based company dedicated to recycling mining clothes into other materials.
The students attended a workshop explaining the statistics of fast fashion and how to be more environmentally friendly with our clothing purchases. They were also given tips on how to extend the life of their own garments and make more sustainable choices.
Following the workshop, we toured the Good Sammy's warehouse to see how donations are processed and then distributed to other Good Sammy stores. Each day, the warehouse processes thousands of items that are sorted by use and quality.
The students then had the opportunity to shop at the outlet store, where they found many new treasures to add to their wardrobes or, in some cases, their stuffed toy collections.
After our trip to the Good Sammy's warehouse, students took the time to purchase their project supplies at Spotlight stores. Using their newfound understanding of sustainable fashion and the production process, they selected the perfect fabric for their major projects.
Year 7 WA Museum
Our Year 7 cohort recently enjoyed an exciting full-day excursion to the WA Museum Boola Bardip. Students engaged in facilitated sessions focused on Aboriginal artefacts, gaining a deeper understanding and appreciation of Indigenous culture and history. The hands-on activities and expert insights provided a rich learning experience that brought classroom lessons to life. In addition to these sessions, the students eagerly explored other sites of the Museum to view various other exhibits, broadening their knowledge across diverse topics. It was a memorable day of discovery and education for our young learners.
Year 12 ATAR English Conference
The Year 12 ATAR English students attended the annual Curtin University English and Literature Conference on 20 June 2024, where they immersed themselves in a series of enriching sessions focused on key syllabus concepts and essential skills. The conference provided an invaluable opportunity for our students to deepen their understanding of complex literary theories and enhance their analytical abilities. This experience reinforced their classroom learning as the student picked up more exam and study tips for their course and exams. Students found the sessions useful with Eairn Santos saying she felt “reassured” after hearing tips and suggestions which were learnt in class.
Encounter '24
Each term, our Year 11s and Year 12s have a full day out of their usual classes, where they take over the auditorium and mine the important facets of faith, life, purpose and relationships. On Friday, 21 June, the Kingdomcity Youth, led by Ps Jesse Hendricks, a parent at our College, engaged our senior students on the things that will help them build a life of integrity, generosity, service, honour and leadership. They got their ‘GLISH’ on!! (each letter referring to one of our College Values).
Our College Captains, ministry team, and Music Captains did a great job of hosting the day, which was filled with interactive activities, pizza (of course), and wonderful moments of being touched by God’s peace, courage, and presence—which is what the day was all about—having an ENCOUNTER with God. Thanks to Mrs Beulah Paul, Ps Linda, Michael, and the staff who supported our leaders as they ran ENCOUNTER ’24.
Photography Excursion
On Tuesday the 20 June 2024, ten Year 11 and 12 students and two teachers braved the cold elements and went on an evening/nighttime excursion to capture some of the highlights of Perth. This was part of a design process that will culminate in promoting Perth to clients, capturing a multi-faceted audience, and depicting cultures and sub-cultures within the region. To warm ourselves, we indulged in great pizza, then forged on to the South Perth foreshore where we overlooked Perth. Some fantastic photos were captured, and we hope to display the best at the Arts and Technology Exhibition, Week 10, Term 3. Thank you to Mrs De Piazza and Mrs Parnham.
Post-School Career Planning Meetings
A reminder that our Careers Teacher, Mrs Byrnes, will be making time for every Year 12 student at The King's College to ensure that they are confident, empowered and excited about their post-school destinations. At this meeting, students will complete an Individual Pathway Plan that outlines their aspirations, goals and actions to complete in the lead-up to finishing Year 12. Students can make appointments to see Mrs Byrnes during lunch or study periods to participate in these meetings. Where parents wish to attend with their child, the meetings can occur at any time. To make an appointment, please access this link
