Term 2
What a productive term we have enjoyed in Physical Education. Cross Country has just been completed with our best result in the District Competition for many years finishing 2nd by just 2 points. Well done to all of the students who performed impressively on the day and behaved impeccably. From those amazing results, 9 students qualified for the division competition leaving Seb from Level 6 making it through to the regional stage. Well done to all of the students who performed so well.
Bike Education
What a fulfilling job it is when you are able to teach a student to ride a bike independently. The beaming smiles displayed when students have mastered a two wheeled bike is priceless. While many students started the program anxious riders or requiring training wheels, the progress made across the Level 4 students has been remarkable. Using our fleet of school bikes and students own bikes, we have developed many important elements of riding a bike in readiness for our journey around Ruffey Lake Park and back early in Term 3. The skills covered so far have included; straight line and single file riding, hand signals, slalom, using gears, using a bell, tight turning, emergency braking, standing on the pedals and negotiating obstacles. Alongside the practical skills, students have gained a better understanding of the important features of a bike including the derailleur, chainring, seat tube to name just a few. It has also been wonderful to see students support their friends along the way and celebrate the impressive milestone.
In other news
Term 3 was also a time to develop our skills in softball. The school was successful in obtaining a grant to purchase a range of softball equipment, including new gloves and bats. The Level 3- 6 students have become more confident in catching low and high balls as well as fielding groundballs. This unit was completed with a T-Ball game for the Level 3 students and a softball game for the Level 5/6 students. This unit goes a long way in providing the necessary skills for interschool sport with T- Ball, rounders and softball all sharing similar rules and skills across the 3 sports.
Junior School students have been developing their hand eye coordination in soccer and basketball in recent weeks. Developing their control of the ball by hand in basketball, dribbling and passing using both feet in soccer. Modified games have engaged students and allowed them to demonstrate their skills. For many students it has been the first time they have scored a goal in soccer or used the correct shooting technique with a basketball.
