Our Student Voice

Student voice and participation encompass opportunities for students to have a say about things that affect them (voice), to make decisions about their learning and its context (agency or empowerment), and to improve their wellbeing, sense of self and connection to learning (engagement). (Student Voice Statement for Catholic Schools, CEVN)

It is so wonderful to see all the opportunities where St Mary's students can voice their opinions, share their ideas and collaborate on decision making. We see this in action daily in learning, but also during class meetings, student leadership meetings, through FIRE carrier meetings, DRI ambassadors, Minnie Vinnies, lunchtime clubs. As often as possible, we allow our students to be a part of decision making processes. We seek feedback from our students on how they learn and engage best and alter our teaching practices to allow for the active participation of our students.

Active participation of students in decision-making about their school and education, enables greater commitment to learning and the development of more self-aware, self-confident and self-sufficient people.

Student voice is highly valued at St Mary's and we reflect on our classroom and whole school approaches to consider ways in which students are empowered to be active contributors in all aspects of the school.
