News from 5B
In Reading, we have been listening to persuasive speeches and reading persuasive mentor texts to help us understand the purpose of persuasive pieces of writing. We have been practicing identifying persuasive techniques in our reading sessions by analysing and critiquing authors' work.
In Writing, we have been learning about how to use persuasive techniques to persuade our audience to take action on certain issues. We have been using rhetorical questions, repetition, high modality words, exaggeration, facts and statistics, emotive language and a call to action to convince our readers to change their mind on a certain topic. Here are some examples of 5B’s published pieces of persuasive writing. We display our writing on the “Wow Work” wall when we have published.
In Maths, we have been working on Multiplication and Division strategies. We have been practicing the grid method, partitioning, vertical algorithm and problem solving as well as learning about short division. We have also been doing a unit of work on Location and Transformation. We have been plotting coordinate points by creating our own maps.
In our Social and Emotional Learning sessions on a Monday, we have been learning about positive coping strategies for when we encounter a problem in our life. We created positive coping profiles which have a mixture of different strategies that we can use if we find ourselves in a stressful situation. We also discussed how we can deal with a problem by reading some example scenarios. Have a look at our positive coping profiles below.
In other news, winter school sport has been going down a treat. The students are enjoying this wonderful social activity on a Friday afternoon. They have been representing the school really well on our visits to other schools in the Dendy district. We also had a footy clinic this week from AFL victoria where we practiced a game called “Superkick”. It’s wonderful to see how enthusiastic and active the Year 5’s are. We are looking forward to lots of more learning and sport for the rest of Term 2.
