Year 6 Camp
Dear Lakeside College Community,
The Year 6 camp was a remarkable success! A memorable 5-day expedition filled with enriching educational experiences and valuable personal development opportunities. The camp provided our students with a unique chance to explore some of Australia's most iconic landmarks and heritage sites, fostering deep connections with our nation's history and democratic processes.
Throughout the duration of the camp, our Year 6 cohort had the privilege of visiting esteemed institutions such as Parliament House, the Australian War Memorial, the National Electoral Education Centre, Old Parliament House and the Museum of Australian Democracy. These visits not only enriched their understanding of Australia's political landscape and historical significance but also instilled a sense of pride and appreciation for our nation's heritage.
Furthermore, beyond the educational aspect, the camp offered invaluable relationship-building opportunities for our students which have undoubtedly strengthened the bonds of friendship and collaboration within our students, laying a strong foundation for their future interpersonal relationships.
Moreover, the camp provided a platform for independent personal development, encouraging students to step out of their comfort zones, showcase resilience and demonstrate leadership skills.
It is with confidence that we can share that the Year 6 camp was a resounding success in terms of both educational enrichment and personal growth. We commend our students for their exemplary behaviour, enthusiasm and engagement throughout the camp, reflecting their dedication to learning and their willingness to embrace new experiences.

Year 3 Camp - Mill Valley Ranch
Monday the 13th of May, Year 3 students set out for a fun-filled 3 days at Mill Valley Ranch. After a welcome from Eddie (yeehaw!) and being split into our 4 groups (Broncs, Bulldoggers, Rough Riders and Rustlers), our students rotated through 4 activities: Raft Building, Aeroball, Ropes Course, and Scatterball. Following a yummy dinner of pasta and garlic bread, we headed out for a night hike in the local area to catch a glimpse of the Aurora Australis (the southern lights), before settling into our beds for the night.
On Tuesday we woke up to a yummy breakfast of waffles, which we devoured before heading off to our 4 rotations for the day: Canoeing, Archery, Disc Golf, and the highly anticipated Horse Riding! Mr Tassoni even came to visit, but unfortunately, he had to leave before fulfilling his goal of riding a horse. The Ice Cream Parlour was open in the afternoon for us to purchase ice creams, chips or chocolates. With tummies full of chicken schnitzel and roast potatoes, we got into our pyjamas and sleeping bags to watch ‘Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory’ while eating popcorn, before heading back to the cabins for the night.
The smell of bacon and eggs hurried us on as we packed our suitcases before breakfast on Wednesday morning. Once we had eaten our fill we played a whole group game of Switch before attending our last Cowboy Chapel. Our final activity was some good old fashioned barn games of Knock The Pin and Newspaper Hockey before a final lunch and a group photo. We hopped onto the bus back to Lakeside weary, but full of amazing memories!
A big thank you to the staff at Mill Valley Ranch, the Lakeside staff who organised and attended the camp, as well as the parents for supporting their children with their first camp experience.

National Simultaneous Storytime
National Simultaneous Storytime took place on Wednesday, May 22nd. This nationwide event saw thousands of students across Australia engage in reading the selected book together.
This year, Lakeside College had the pleasure of reading "Bowerbird Blues" by Aura Parker. We were fortunate to have various volunteers visit our classes to read this engaging and educational book to our students.
Through the story of the Bowerbird and its unique characteristics, our students explored the concept of collecting and the joy it brings.
As part of the learning surrounding the book, our students delved into the fascinating world of the Bowerbird and its need for collecting various objects to decorate its bower. This led to thought-provoking discussions about the importance of caring for our environment and the impact of littering on wildlife.
The conversations spurred by "Bowerbird Blues" provided a valuable opportunity for our students to reflect on their own actions and consider the ways in which they can contribute to a cleaner and more sustainable environment. This aligns with our ongoing efforts to instil in our students a sense of environmental responsibility and stewardship.
We would like to extend our gratitude to all the volunteers who generously gave their time to make National Simultaneous Storytime a memorable and enriching experience for our students. Their participation and support are deeply appreciated.
As always, we value your partnership in your child's education and encourage you to continue fostering a love for reading and learning at home. Please be sure to take a minute or two to enjoy the many artworks around the school that have been created to celebrate Bowerbird Blues.
