Year 5 News
Hey Everyone,
Welcome back to another exciting edition of our Grade 5 newsletter! We've been up to some cool stuff lately, so let's dive right in and see what we've been learning.
Numeracy
This past month, we've been exploring the fascinating world of fractions. Yes, fractions! We've been getting cozy with proper fractions, improper fractions, and even mixed numbers.
It's been a whirlwind of numbers, but our Grade 5 superstars have been crushing it. We've been identifying fractions, simplifying them like pros, and even ordering a whole range of them.
Who knew fractions could be so much fun? Keep up the fantastic work, everyone!
Literacy
In the world of words, our Year 5 wordsmiths have been busy unleashing their creativity with figurative language. We've been diving into the magical realms of similes, metaphors, and personification.
These literary devices aren't just fancy words – they're like secret ingredients that make our writing sparkle and shine. By using similes, we're making comparisons that bring our descriptions to life. Metaphors let us paint vivid pictures by suggesting one thing is another. And with personification, we're giving human qualities to non-human things, making our stories and poems burst with personality.
It's been a blast exploring how these tools can make our writing more interesting and engaging for our readers. Keep experimenting with those words, Year 5 wordsmiths – the literary world is yours to conquer!
Inquiry
Anchoring all this fantastic learning the students teamed up to explore the unique features of a range of regions in our world. Unknown to the students, this task was merely a provocation for our new Unit of Inquiry - How the World Works. Our new central idea is, Changes to the Earth’s Surface and Natural Environment can Impact on Human Lives.
So, using their newly built models as our test subjects, we explored the devastating impact that natural disasters have on the natural environment, human society and infrastructure.
Each region was subjected to a natural event that the real-life counterpart is prone to. Such events include volcanic eruption, earthquake, landslide, tsunami and tornado.
The teachers were very impressed with how the students handled these disasters, with maybe a shed tear or two.
Please enjoy looking through the photos of the creation stage and watching the devastation unfold in the video.
That's it for this edition of our Year 5 newsletter. Keep up the awesome work, keep exploring, and keep shining bright like the stars you are!
