Grade 4 Community News

We are now more than halfway through Term 1, and it has been a jam-packed, exciting start to the year so far!
READING
In Grade 4, we’ve been learning about the fascinating history of ancient China, focusing on its many dynasties.
A dynasty is a period when one family rules over China. We learned that dynasties often lasted for many years, and each one contributed something special to China's culture, government, and society. We started learning about the Qin Dynasty (221 BCE - 206 BCE), known for unifying China and creating the first emperor, Shi Huangdi. This dynasty is famous for building the Great Wall of China and creating the Terracotta Army, which was built to protect the emperor’s tomb. The Han Dynasty (206 BCE - 220 CE) followed and was one of the most successful. We learned how it expanded China’s borders, developed the Silk Road, and made important advancements in science, technology, and culture. This dynasty reigned for over 400 years.
The Tang Dynasty brought the rise of Wu Zhao, the only female who became emperor during ancient China.
The Grade 4s have enjoyed learning about Chinese history and culture and creating many things that made them the most advanced in the world during these times.
WRITING
In our Grade 4 writing lessons, we've been working on creating imaginative narratives—stories where we use our imagination to build exciting, creative writing! Here's a summary of what we've been learning: We started by brainstorming ideas for our stories, thinking about interesting characters, settings, and problems. We learned how to organize our thoughts using planning templates to encourage creative thinking.
Our imaginative narratives have allowed us to explore endless possibilities, and we’re excited to continue creating stories that take us to new, exciting places! Great job, Grade 4! Keep writing and dreaming big!
MATHS
In Grade 4, we’ve been exploring fractions and understanding what fractions are. A fraction represents a part of a whole, written as a numerator/denominator. For example, in the fraction 3/4, 3 is the numerator (how many parts we have), and 4 is the denominator (how many equal parts the whole is divided into). We are also learning about fractions on a number line and mixed-number fractions such as 1 ½ and displaying them on a number line to show our understanding.
It’s been a great time exploring fractions, and the students are doing an amazing job understanding how fractions work in maths and everyday life.
