Grade 3 Community News
Dear Grade 3 Families,
As we reach the halfway point of the term, we celebrate all the hard work, growth, and achievements our students have made so far. A special highlight was teachers and students loving our school photos day, where everyone looked their best!
Knowledge Building
This term, we’ve been exploring Matilda as our class novel, and our students have thoroughly enjoyed analysing the characters. They have loved questioning the author to explore the development of characters like Miss Trunchbull and Miss Honey and how they contrast with each other. Students have been deeply engaged in our text-level reading lessons, and they have shown great success in recording their ideas and understanding. Through rich classroom discussions, they’ve been able to share their thoughts, ask questions, and build a deeper understanding of this fantastic text!
In the second part of our English block, students engage in grammar and sentence-level writing instruction before applying these skills to their own writing. This approach helps students focus on sentence structure to ensure they develop strong, effective sentences that make sense. Then students have been using the knowledge they’ve built in reading to become authors themselves. They’ve had the opportunity to apply their understanding of literary devices learned from Roald Dahl, creating their own narrative stories and showcasing their creativity and writing skills.
Numeracy
In maths, we have begun our addition and subtraction unit, building on the skills learned in our previous place value unit. Students are learning to recognise and explain the connection between addition and subtraction as inverse operations. They are applying this understanding to successfully partition numbers and solve problems with unknown values in number sentences, strengthening their problem-solving skills.
Vocabulary
We have begun our Vocabulary cycles for this term. This term our target words will be coming from our novel study Matilda. Our week 6 words are determined, heroic, splendid, hesitate, precious, peculiar. You may wish to support your child by assisting them to use these words in context.
