Fire Education
On Thursday 6th of March, Foundation children were visited by firefighters from the Balwyn Fire Station as part of the Fire Education program. This program is designed for children in their first year of school. This is the age at which most children become able to effectively learn and utilise fire safety information when presented within a formal program. The children were so excited to meet the firefighters and were fully engaged in this education session.
During our Firefighter session number one, children explored:
- Good and bad fires
- The importance of adult supervision around fire
- What to do in a fire: “Crawl down low and go, go, go!”
- The importance and role of smoke alarms in houses
- When to call 000
- The various equipment firefighters need to do their job safely
After our first session, children were assigned two home learning tasks. The first task was to check that they had working smoke alarms in their house. The second task was to decide on a safe place to meet their family and the firefighters in the event of a fire in their home. Children were asked to draw their home, their Safe Meeting Place and the people they lived with on a worksheet and return it to school ready to share with their peers.
During the second session with the firefighters, children:
- shared and explained their safe meeting place
- shared where the smoke alarms are located in their house
- discussed what to do if they were to catch on fire: “Stop, drop, cover and roll!”
Finally, it was time for the most exciting part of the Fire Ed Program…a chance to check out the fire truck, spray the fire hose and listen to the siren!
Echi Echidna 2025 Adventures!
At the beginning of Week 7 Goldie was the next person in FKJ to share her exciting adventures with Echi Echidna. Echi had many adventures with Goldie. His first activity was to visit Goldie's Dad's work place. Echi and Goldie walked up to the top of the building and saw an amazing view of the city! Sunday was a very hot day so Goldie made sure that Echi was cool by taking him to the local pool. They swam in the refreshing water and tried to pick up the Sinkies at the bottom of the pool! What fun! Echi also had a sleep over at Goldie's cousin's house. They also ate a delicious breakfast with Goldie's grandparents! Delicious! Thank you so much Goldie for sharing your fantastic adventures with your grade. We thoroughly enjoyed listening to the fun times you had with Echi!
In Week 8 Paul happily shared his exciting Echi adventures with the class.
Paul had more fun adventures with this cuddly fellow! First Paul took Echi to the shops. It was a rainy day and so Echi and Paul enjoyed looking at all of the interesting items at the shops. Echi wanted to buy a toy but Paul said, "Not today Echi". Paul and his big sister Sharon then took Echi to the local park. Echi had fun being pushed on the swing and watched Paul and Sharon have fun! Paul then took Echi back to his house and read his reader to Echi. Echi loved listening to this story. The last adventure was to eat a cold, sweet dessert with Paul. Yum!
Thank you Paul for sharing this fun week with Echi - we thoroughly enjoyed listening to your fun tales!
We look forward to seeing and hearing about more Echi adventures in the future!
