This Fortnight In Literacy

By Laani 6PW

Book Club in 5/6

All children in grades 5 and 6 participate in Book Club. Students are put into groups and novels are assigned by the teacher. In this group we:

-look at character, plot, theme, symbolism etc

-make inferences about what has or might happen in the text

-predict what will happen next

-make text to self/connections to the world/self

-read with our group out loud

Some of the books the grade 6’s have been reading are:

Once

The boy and the Spy

A Great Escape

Fantastic Mr Fox

Boy Overboard

Mao’s Last Dancer

Peter Pan

Restart

Billionaire Boy

Girl Underground

Overall book club is a great addition to our schools reading program.

Also, just a reminder that all students are encouraged to read at home 30mins a day. Happy Reading!

This Fortnight In Numeracy

By Zavier 6SC

For this fortnight in numeracy students have been exploring BODMAS equations by looking at brackets. To put their skills into practice, they worked in groups to solve a series of questions aimed at cracking a secret recipe. Students have also started looking at area and perimeter. So far, they have explored how to calculate area and perimeter, and looked at how shapes can have the same area but different perimeter, and vice versa. As a challenge, students have also created a mock backyard or playground, and used their knowledge to calculate the costing. So far, students have been enjoying math and can’t wait for more!

This Fortnight in Leadership & KGT

By Deborah 6SC, Matilda 6SB and Daniel 6SB

KGT are busy setting up the new ‘heartbeat’ of KGT in room 17. This will be the central place for all waste audits and preparation of items for newsletters and assemblies. They are also renovating the Garden and Tool Sheds. The focus on plants at the moment is growing grasses indigenous to this area and to Tasmania. The recent seed has been collected in the Tasmanian wilderness and brought to BPPS for germinating and eventually growing at the school. These grasses will provide habitat for native birds, insects and animals. A big thank you for all the parents who have been helping us.

Mr Wickham: How can you not love fried chicken?

Me: What can’t you live without?
