Learning Reflection
đ Literacy
Literature
Over the past fortnight, the Grade 2s have concluded their unit âUnder the Southern Crossâ. Throughout this unit, students learned to:
respond to and identify the features of a hybrid narrative non-fiction text
identify how the language and form of a text vary according to purpose, audience and mode
express personal responses to the world represented in the text and use language to show appreciation and preferences
understand and use tier 2 vocabulary from the text
identify and convert fragments into sentences
expand simple sentences using who/what, where and when
extend a noun into a noun group with an article, adjective and noun
Â
Additionally, this unit had an overarching theme of âConnection to Countryâ where students built knowledge about how places are shown on maps, from local areas to regions and states/territories, and how people are connected to these places, including the strong connections First Nations Australians have to Country. This important focus has continued into their new unit âThe First Scientistsâ. This story by Corey Tutt shines a light on the remarkable scientific knowledge of Australiaâs First Peoples. During their first week of this unit students have explored the following:Â
- exploring new vocabulary (e.g. familiar, harsh, notorious, modern)
- identifying the features of an informative text
- planning an informative text
- comparing text purposes and audiences
- concluding statements
- identifying the author's opinion
Â
Preview - Over the next fortnight, students will complete their unit on âThe First Scientistsâ. By the conclusion of this unit, they will have created their own information report. We will then move into a Knowledge Rich unit, looking at 'Geography of Australia.'

Word Work
Â
â MathsÂ
Students have continued building their confidence in Grade 2 Maths over the past two weeks, working deeply with 3-digit numbers up to 1000. We have been placing numbers accurately on a number line, using what we know about hundreds, tens and ones to help us estimate and position them correctly. Students have also been comparing and ordering 3-digit numbers, remembering to look carefully at the hundreds column first to determine which number is larger or smaller.
Â
Alongside this, students have been writing numerals in words and identifying target numbers on a number chart using place value clues. We have also explored renaming numbers by regrouping tens, ones and hundreds, helping students understand that numbers can be represented in different but equal ways. It has been wonderful to see students applying their place value knowledge with increasing confidence and accuracy.

Preview - Over the next fortnight, students will begin their unit on Time, focusing on reading, representing and drawing oâclock, half past and quarter past/to times on an analogue clock. They will also explore clockwise and anti-clockwise turns, building a strong understanding of how time moves around the clock face.
đWellbeing
Over the past fortnight in Wellbeing, our Grade 2 students have been continuing their learning through the Friendology program. In Session 3, Making Friends, students explored four practical strategies to help build connections:Â
Super Introducer
Ask and Pass
Quick Questions, and
Be a Friendship Magnet.Â
They enjoyed practising these skills through role-plays and class discussions. In Session 4, Friendship Facts, students focused on understanding the âtruthsâ of friendship and developing realistic expectations. We explored what trust and respect look and feel like in a friendship, and how these important qualities help build strong, positive relationships.
Preview -Â In the upcoming weeks, the Grade 2 students will participate in Friendology Session 5 Friend-o-meter and Session 6 Friendship Fires. These sessions will support students to reflect on their own and their friendsâ feelings in friendships, while learning strategies to resolve conflict.
đżAcknowledgement of Country
This week, our Grade 2 classes worked together to create their own Acknowledgement of Country. We discussed its purpose -Â to show respect to the Traditional Custodians of the land where we learn and play, recognise their ongoing connection to Country, and honour the history, culture and contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Students thoughtfully shared ideas to create a class statement reflecting our commitment to respect and inclusion.
Â
Each student then decorated a leaf, which we combined into a beautiful mural. The leaves symbolise growth, unity, and our shared responsibility to care for the land and one another.
