This week saw the opening of the Grade 5/6 Art Show which is being held in the Collaboration Space. On Tuesday afternoon, after a few short speeches, the students headed into the space and finally got to see all their marvellous artwork up on display. They eagerly showed off their creativity to their friends and family, reading the thoughtful descriptions about the pieces and voting for their favourites.

Up on display was a variety of different artworks, using different materials, all inspired by the Australian artist and musician, Reg Mombassa. The students created a version of their own ‘Cranium Universe’ using water colour paint and pencils, inside their ‘cranium’ they painted thoughts, ideas, places, interests, hobbies and things they liked to draw. In this category, Bennett from 6R was awarded the Prinicipal’s Choice from Mr. Kent:

In the centre of the space there are several tables that held the 3D artworks, Clay Villages based on Mombassa’s landscapes, specifically his Mambo designed poster. The students collaborated in groups for this piece and first created a ‘map’ using water colours. They included features of a landscape, mountains, volcanoes, lakes and rivers and then with air dried clay the buildings and structures were sculpted, painted and added to their map. Elise and Mitsuki from 6H received the Art Teacher Award for this category:

Reg Mombassa famously loves drawing with charcoal, “Charcoal is the greatest drawing implement known to humans. It is the simplest and most ancient art material: a stick of burnt wood. Our ancestors used charcoal to produce the first artworks on cave walls tens of thousands of years ago”. For the final category the students were asked to take inspiration from their own clay villages and draw a charcoal landscape. Using charcoal they could blend and smudge, darken the lines to show value and created different perspectives of their work. Grace from 5L was received the Prinicipa’ls Award from Ms Wright for her charcoal drawing:

Well done to our absolutely amazing art teacher Ms Rodriguez who has worked tirelessly with the students to make this event a reality.
