Restorative Practices

As we move through Term 4, a time filled with energy and excitement, we also recognise some of the natural challenges our learners face during this busy season. Fatigue can lead to dips in resilience, and some behaviours we thought had been settled may re-emerge. We are working together to support learners in managing these challenges positively, focusing on helping them maintain consistent behaviour expectations. Recently, our leaders discussed approaches that can foster this, focusing on clear communication, positive reinforcement, and effective preparation for special events.

One strategy we’re using is what we call “behavioural priming,” where we make it clear what behaviours we want to see more of. Instead of focusing on what not to do, we communicate our expectations in positive terms, encouraging them to be punctual, prepared, and respectful. By reinforcing these behaviours daily, both through praise and constructive feedback, we’re helping learners build habits that contribute to a supportive and respectful learning environment. This approach not only helps learners understand expectations but also empowers them to actively contribute to our positive school atmosphere.

Additionally, Term 4 is packed with special events—excursions, celebrations, and graduations—each bringing excitement but also new situations to navigate. In preparation, we’re looking at “preparation circles” where learners come together to discuss upcoming events, share their feelings, and set personal goals for behaviour. After the event, we encourage learners to reflect on how well they achieved these goals, fostering a sense of accountability and continuous improvement. Through these practices, we aim to provide all our learners with the skills they need to enjoy term 4 while also learning valuable lessons in self-management and reflection.
