Term 4, Week 6 - Friday 15th November, 2024
Dear Families of OLSC
It is hard to believe that Term 4 is coming to an end so fast - we have just over 4 weeks to go. Thanks to everyone for your attendance at last week's school disco and your continuing support of school events.
This weekend we will have our last community mass for the 2024 school year. I would sincerely like to thank all of our families who have supported community masses this year which has in turn ultimately supported the Parish of St Andrew's.
I encourage everyone to come along this Sunday at 10:00 am and be part of our last Community Mass. Antonio from Yr 6 will be receiving the Eucharist for the the first time in the Sacrament of Holy Communion following his recent baptism at our last Community Mass. Congratulations Antonio.
This week we hosted next year's prep students for their first 'big school' orientation. The students were very well settled and have already started to get into the routines of school. The second orientation session will take place on Monday.
We currently have a waiting list for enrolment in almost all year levels. Please let us know if you are not returning to OLSC as soon as arrangements are made so we can confrim places for those on the waiting list.
Last Friday was our disco and the night was a great success. There was a huge turn out and DJ Julius ensured the dance floor was pretty 'hectic.' The silent auction saw some great bidding and each of the art pieces were sold. Each of the Learning Groups submitted an art piece and the works were of an impressively high quality.
A total of $1,351 was raised on the silent auction, thank you to everyone who placed their bids and congratulations to our auction winners.
The most exciting day of the year for the kids at OLSC is our annual school colour run!
It is a great community event where parents and families are invited to come watch and cheer on their children.
Spread the word and ask your family and friends to donate any amount they are comfortable with. Pass on the trybooking link or QR Code for them to donate.
The Big Summer Read is taking place at all Wyndham City libraries over the summer holidays. This is an initiative that aims to combat the 'summer slide' where children often don't pick up and read books over the holidays. The Big Summer Read runs from 1st December 2024 until 31st January 2025. Register and participate for free at https://www.wyndham.vic.gov.au/kids-big-summer-read . Pre-registration begins on 6th November this year.
For more information, please contact Wyndham City Libraries on 8734 8999 or mail@wyndham.vic.gov.au.
This week, the students who were successful at completing the Victorian Premiers' Reading Challenge earlier in the year, were presented with their certificates. Congratulations to all of these students, this is an impressive achievement!! A particularly wonderful effort from Gillian's class where every student managed to complete the challenge and receive a certificate - Well done 1/2 Orange!!
Ryan Fitzgerald passed away on the weekend after a prolonged and admirably brave battle
with pancreatic cancer. He was surrounded and supported by his family.
Ryan and Nelifer are very active members of the St Andrew’s parish since settling in the area and they joined the OLSC community when enrolling Cephas in 2022 and Katurah in 2024. Cephas is currently in Year 2 and Katurah is in Prep. Cephas is in Tina’s Learning Group and Katurah is in Rachael’s Learning Group. Athalia will join OLSC in Prep in 2025.
Students will be told of Ryan’s passing tomorrow at school and Ryan, along with Jane were remembered at our whole school mass today. I ask that all our community keep Ryan, Nelifer, Cephas, Katurah and Athalia as well as Ryan’s parents Conrad and Aida in their prayers at this very sad time.
Next week we have a new member joining the administration team in the office. Tennessee will join the team alongside Ruki, Chrissy and Bec and will be working each weekday except for Thursdays.
The position was advertised on the Catholic Education Office website as well as on Seek and we had over 120 applicants.
This week many of our Year 6 students visited MacKillop to assist in preparing them for the transition to secondary school. A highlight was getting to reconnect with many past OLSC students, many of who took them a tour of the college. Please see Gus's reflection of the day.
First thing on Wednesday morning we headed into the MacKillop bus and we were on our way to their campus. When we got there we met Mr Exton he took us on a tour and our first stop was the school theatre. We met a bunch of year sixes from last year (Atem, Ethan L, Zachary and Christian and others) then we split into groups and continued with our tour. We headed to the Year 7 building, and then we met a bird named Gus who was a cockatoo. After that, we went to the year 8s or 10s building where we saw some current student siblings.
Then we saw some wildlife like snakes and some sea life as well. We got to see the snake but we couldn't because the door to the snake was opened all of us were shocked and we had to leave the classroom and our tour guide locked the door. After that, we headed to the year 7s building and saw some familiar faces and some of those faces recognised our faces.
After the visit between the years 7s we saw the pick up and drop off bay in the year 7 area then we went to the undercover area to sit down and talk and hung around to wait for the others. Later on, Atem showed us the way to the exits to the bus and back to school we went.
