English Speaking Competition

2024, has been a great year for public speaking for our MCC students in such competitions as the Plain English Speaking Competition and the Lion's Club Public Speaking Awards. Together with Murrumbidgee Regional High Schools (Griffith and Wade), and Verity, MCC have created a new public speaking competition for Griffith area high schools as an opportunity for students in to improve their confidence and to develop their speech-writing and public speaking skills, with a specific focus on persuasion. The Griffith Interschool Speakfest (GISS) aims to encourage the use of clear and effective spoken English. The competition will be held on the November 25th, the competition will run as a face-to-face local final, to be held at Marian Catholic College with currently 12 students competing.  The competition is free to enter and has two divisions - 14 and under and 15 and over. Students must present both a prepared speech and an impromptu speech. The prepared speech can be on any subject chosen by the contestant, however it must have a persuasive focus. There are no restrictions on the subject matter for the prepared speech, so speakers can choose any issue that they care about. The subject of this speech will be of their own choosing, but it must be approved by the public speaking coordinator at their school.  Any student wishing to participate or know more can see Mrs Malagre. As this is a new competition, we kindly ask if there are any parents or companies that wish to provide sponsorship for prizes to contact the school.
