The importance of savouring special moments
At this time of year, we are fortunate to enjoy a fabulous array of events and celebrations across the School. When these occasions are combined with the commitments our students and families already manage beyond Kilvington, it’s no wonder December often seems to pass in a blur of activity.
In such busy times, it can be easy for special occasions and moments to rush by without truly appreciating or savouring the unique feelings and experiences they bring.
As part of our holistic wellbeing approach at Kilvington, we encourage our students to cherish their positive moments and memories. Reconnecting with these ‘light-filled’ moments—especially during challenges or setbacks—can have profound benefits for overall wellness and wellbeing.
According to behavioural psychologists, the ability to savour and recall positive experiences offers many benefits, including:
- Enhancing our emotional wellbeing
- Strengthening relationships
- Reducing stress and anxiety
- Boosting gratitude
- Creating lasting positive memories
Here are some ways we encourage our students to savour these special moments:
- Be present: Focus on the here and now. Engage fully in the moment and reflect on how it resonates with you.
- Engage your senses: Notice the sights, sounds, smells, tastes and textures around you. Heightened sensory awareness can enrich your experience.
- Express gratitude: Take a moment to reflect on what you’re grateful for in the situation. When appropriate, share your appreciation with others, especially those who made the experience possible.
- Reflect afterwards: Spend time after the event reflecting on what made it special. This reinforces positive emotions and memories.
As we round out another brilliant year at Kilvington, we’ll be encouraging our students not to focus on every single moment, but to savour those that are personally meaningful to them. By doing so, they can carry forward the joy, gratitude and learning that these moments bring.
