Year 5 Leadership Speeches

Tomorrow, Year 5 will present their leadership speeches to the school community. They have been working alongside their teachers to consider their roles as student leaders and prepare their speeches. While speaking in front of others makes many people feel nervous, public speaking is such an important skill to conquer. Following are some reasons why being able to speak in public is a key skill to learn:

  • Public speaking improves communication skills - being able to share an idea or opinion to a group of people helps children to improve their communication skills and confidence.
  • Public speaking results in improved performance in other academic areas - public speaking encourages critical thinking, an important skill that helps children find and apply information in order to solve problems.
  • Public speaking helps build literacy skills - it involves planning, writing and comprehension, all of which are important elements of literacy.
  • Public speaking encourages a growth mindset - when children begin to overcome fears and see improvements in their public speaking ability, their confidence grows and they develop a growth mindset. With a growth mindset, children are likely to embrace new challenges in their life and believe in themselves.

Have a wonderful week of learning and fun!
