Supporting Our Students' Wellbeing: Navigating End-of-Year Challenges

At St Finbar’s, we’ve noticed an increase in student meltdowns, particularly during playtimes and in the afternoons. These moments can be distressing for our children, and as a community, it’s important we work together to understand and support them.

There are many reasons why children might be feeling more overwhelmed at this time of year. Our Ripple data indicates that students across all grades are coming to school feeling tired. This is no surprise given the seasonal changes—hot nights, the busyness of end-of-year events, increased sporting events and school activities, and the anticipation or worries about what’s ahead next year.

Latest Ripple Data Issues and Strengths:

While there are many things we can’t change, it’s essential to focus on what we can control to support our children’s wellbeing. These include:

  • Ensuring enough sleep: A consistent bedtime routine can make a big difference.
  • Maintaining routines: Where possible, try to keep daily schedules predictable.
  • Eating healthily and consistently: Nutritious meals and snacks provide the energy children need.
  • Building in downtime: Quiet moments can help recharge their emotional batteries.
  • Connecting through conversation: Make time to chat about their feelings, worries, or successes.
  • Getting outside and staying active: Fresh air and movement are great for mental and physical health.
  • Doing things that bring joy: Activities that spark happiness help foster resilience.

At St Finbar’s, we are committed to fostering resilience in our students. Resilience involves bouncing back when things don’t go as planned, looking for positives in challenging situations, and seeing setbacks as opportunities for growth. These principles align with our focus on developing a growth mindset—helping children learn that challenges are a normal part of life and an essential step towards achieving success.

We encourage parents and carers to support these efforts at home. Together, we can help our students finish the year feeling confident, positive, and ready for the next chapter.

If you have any concerns or would like further support, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Let’s continue working as a team to nurture our children’s wellbeing and resilience.

Thanks for all your support,
