STAGE 5 CAREERS

The Careers space has had a busy start to term 2 with stage 5 careers classes continuing their pathways lessons. Year 9 classes have begun to examine which career industries are suited to them based on the personal attributes focus from term 1. Year 10 classes will begin exploring subject selection options for year 11 and 12 study and will engage in the Minimum Standards testing which is required to receive the Higher School Certificate. There are 3 Minimum Standards tests; Numeracy, Reading and Writing which students across NSW complete to show that they can meet the minimum standard for the HSC. Students will be supported by the College throughout this testing process and are able to complete each test multiple times if required. More information about this testing is available on the NSW Education Standards Authority website.

TAFE NSW in collaboration with the Department of Customer Service and Training Services NSW are hosting a virtual event on Wednesday May 22 at 6:00pm.

“Girls in Trade”

At the event, you will:

• Join schools from across NSW who are getting involved,

• Hear from young women working in trades, including the 2022 Women in Trades winner,

• Learn about opportunities in emerging and growing trades, including clean and renewable energy, mechanical, engineering and sustainable eco-friendly construction,

• Submit your questions ahead of time and hear the answers live.

This event is for all NSW high school students; however, it has been especially designed for girls in year 10 who are coming up to subject selection. Parents and educators are welcome to register and attend too.

WORK EXPERIENCE

Work Experience opportunities are continuing for year 10 with many students already completing their week of industry learning. Work Experience intended to be student led, interest based and not compulsory. Any year 10 student who wishes to complete work experience must complete the Go2WorkExperience modules prior to going on placement. Please send a copy of your certificate to Mrs Galvin and follow up for the correct forms. Students are not permitted to attend any Work Experience without completing the Go2WorkExperience modules and submitting the required forms.

UNE OPEN DAY

Year 12 students are now half way through their HSC year and there has been a lot of valuable information circulating for a range of post schooling pathways. In week 2, Year 12 attended the UNE Open Day where they engaged in a range of hands-on workshops, tours and talks with faculty and current students.

UNIVERSITY PATHWAYS

While the ATAR is still the main selection tool used by most unis, there are other ways for you to show that you’re ready to succeed at tertiary study. Many institutions have one or more early offer schemes for Year 12 students. Through these schemes, the institutions will assess you using criteria other than (or in addition to) your ATAR. Many institutions have already opened their Early Entry applications and these dates are regularly updated on the OCC Year 12 Google Classroom.

For students who accept an offer to a University or tertiary institution there can be many costs involved with engaging in study. The StudyWorkGrow website currently has links to many scholarships, paid internships and competitions which can assist with some of these costs.

UNIVERSITY OPEN DAYS

Live links to these open days are posted on the OCC Year 12 Google Classroom.

Sydney University is coming to Armidale on the 6th of June at the Armidale City Bowling Club from 5:30 - 6pm. This is an information evening to find out all you need to know about the University of Sydney! Learn about the Regional and Remote Entry Scheme and MySydney Scheme. The session will also cover information about courses, admission requirements, entry schemes/pathways, fees, and scholarships, as well as the type of support available on campus. Uni students and alumni from Regional NSW will share stories, tips on moving away from home and advice about their journey to university and beyond. You’ll also get the chance to speak with staff and students and have all your questions about the University of Sydney answered.
