Dear Families, Students and Community Members,

As we embark on Term 2, the dedication of Mordialloc College to nurturing a comprehensive teaching and learning environment that empowers every student to pursue their passions remains steadfast. The fruits of this commitment continue to blossom within our classrooms, and we are thrilled to showcase our endeavours at the upcoming College Open Night on Thursday, April 24th.

Pivot:

Central to our teaching and learning philosophy is the principle of engaging all students by providing diverse learning opportunities. We believe in the power of student input, and to that end, we recently conducted Pivot surveys in Term 1. These surveys sought student opinions on various aspects including classroom environment, instruction, relationships, and student voice. Armed with this invaluable feedback, our staff are diligently working with students to unpack the results, ensuring that our practices align with the needs and aspirations of our student body.

Numeracy Intervention:

At Mordialloc College, we are committed to providing additional support to our students through various intervention programs. This year, we are proud to continue the Tutor Learning Initiative, generously funded by the State Government. Numeracy tutors are currently working with targeted students in Years 8, 9, and 10, providing tailored support within classroom settings. This program not only reinforces key numeracy skills but also cultivates confidence among students, irrespective of their proficiency levels.

NAPLAN:

In March, our Year 7 and 9 students completed NAPLAN Online with resounding success. Over two weeks, more than 1500 student tests were submitted, showcasing exemplary efforts and a commitment to personal best. The earlier testing window will enable schools and families to receive timely feedback. Moreover, parents and carers will receive simplified and clearer information about their child's NAPLAN achievements, facilitating meaningful discussions with teachers regarding their progress.

Mathematics in the Senior School:

Continuous assessment and feedback are integral components of our senior mathematics classes. While the journey may seem daunting for some, there are strategies that can alleviate the pressure. Regular practice tests and SACs, coupled with a focus on self-improvement rather than comparison, can enhance understanding and retention of key concepts. Embracing the idea that learning occurs through struggle and mistakes, we encourage students to adopt a growth mindset, recognizing that challenges pave the way for deeper comprehension.

As we look ahead, I urge all our students to seize the multitude of learning opportunities available to them. Together, let us continue to foster a culture of excellence and achievement at Mordialloc College.
