Year 5 & 6

Around our level

During the past two weeks, students in Years 5 and 6 spent time researching the ANZACs and the role they played in World War 1. They gathered lots of interesting information, uncovering stories of courage, sacrifice, and resilience. They also gained a deeper understanding of the ANZAC legacy and its significance in shaping our national identity. Their findings were then presented using Canva, Google Slides or poster paper. The Year 6 captains also commemorated the sacrifices of the Australian soldiers in a whole school ceremony.

Our whole-school cross country was on Tuesday April 30th and it was terrific to see our students displaying perseverance, teamwork and pushing personal boundaries.

Here are some individual comments about the Cross Country or ANZAC projects from the students.

5/6A

Cross country was the best! I came fourth, but I would have come third place if I didn't have a big stitch. The good thing is that I made it to districts cross country. I also did a story about the ANZACs on Canva and it was the best thing I have ever done!

For ANZAC Day, we coloured in poppies and made ANZAC themed posters. We also had a minute of silence and listened to the ANZAC bugle. Overall, ANZAC day was great. Lest We Forget.

Cross country was super fun, but SUPER tiring. The day started with the Year 6 boys and then the Year 6 girls. I think I went pretty well for coming 4th place… not my best, but not my worst. I’m going to District, but I don’t know how I feel about that! Captains also helped the Year Ones, Twos and Preps. It was a lot of fun helping those classes, but again it was also so tiring! It was super cute seeing their faces when they crossed the finish line!

Cross Country was super fun but also very challenging because we had to run 3km! My only goal was to beat my last year's score which was 2nd. I'm very proud of how I did because I came 1st place!!

Cross Country is not a lot of fun. We had to run 3km around Lilydale Lake. Even though I don’t enjoy running, l came 7th which means I get to go to District.

I loved the whole-school Cross Country at Lilydale Lake. It was lots of fun running and watching people run over the finish line. I came second by only 0.1 of a second behind Oscar Milton.

Learning about the ANZACs was interesting. I enjoyed making the poster and I had a lot of fun doing it. We also had one minute of silence.

I learned that poppies were the only plants growing after the war, and the place they were growing is now called Flanders Field. Poppies have become a main part of ANZAC day. ANZAC stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps.

Cross Country was a total disaster for me and Jack Ross because we were running in the rain. I came 8th and Jack Ross came 7th. Jack had a stitch because he was running too fast and ate before the race. We are going to District, but I don't think that Jack and I should go because we went to District last year and it did not turn out very well.

For Cross Country, I had a cold and a cough so I couldn't run that fast. When I was about three quarters  through, I found out that Ollie O had pulled a muscle, so I was walking with him for the rest of the race. When we were at the finish line, I let him in front. I came 10th, and still made it through to District.
