Dear Families

Our 2024 Student Representative Council (SRC) has made impressive progress in their leadership and representation of students as they work towards their vision … to strive to be authentic in our actions and purposeful with our commitments, to promote an inclusive and collaborative College community. The SRC has worked with students to be approachable and accessible in their leadership of the younger years, being action-oriented in representing their interests and seeking input to enact purposeful change.

In support of student wellbeing, Wellbeing Captains, Esther and Maya have commenced the Let’s Gather initiative.  Every second Wednesday during lunch, students and staff gather to partake in activities including Just Dance, boardgames, yoga and other activities to promote inclusivity and connection with each other. In addition to Let’s Gather, the SRC has once again this year committed to ‘The Push Up Challenge’ to raise awareness and money for mental health. Throughout June, students, led by Challenge Ambassadors Maya and Esther and other leaders will be encouraged to complete 3249 push-ups (or other forms of exercise), to commemorate the 3249 lives lost to suicide in Australia in 2022. The Push Up Challenge will allow students to spark conversations surrounding mental health with peers, parents and teachers. In the coming weeks, SRC leaders will participate in the Greatest Shave in support of the Leukaemia Foundation and its work with research, care and support for those battling cancer.

As a part of the College’s commitment to reconciliation, and in preparation for Reconciliation Week (27 May to 3 June), the SRC will work with students to understand the harmful impact of discrimination on individuals and communities. Commencing with last week’s Global Café student forum, the SRC workshopped tangible and practical initiatives for promoting inclusion and connection with Homeroom Leaders from Years 7 to 11. Working together, their messaging to students over the coming weeks will be to raise awareness of the importance of empathy, tolerance and acceptance as values that underpin respectful relationships, not just in the context of reconciliation, but in nurturing an inclusive community for all to enjoy.

Sport Uniform Trial

After extensive engagement and feedback from students via the AWE Survey, Global Café student forum, Uniform Committee and student focus groups, the following amendments have been made to the Secondary Uniform Code as a trial for the remainder of Term 2, commencing Monday 13 May:

  • Students with Physical Education or Outdoor Education classes in Periods 1 or 2 can wear correct sports uniform to school. Students must change into summer/winter academic uniform at the end of their Physical Education or Outdoor Education lesson.
  • Students with Physical Education or Outdoor Education in Periods 5 or 6 must change into sports uniform at lunchtime and can wear correct sports uniform home.
  • Students continue to have the option of wearing the sports uniform with House shirt for Wellbeing Wednesdays.

It is intended that by creating more flexibility around the wearing of the sports uniform, students will be provided with more teaching and learning time for these practical based classes. It will also reduce the volume of students needing to access the changerooms at peak times.

This will be a trial for the remainder of Term 2 2024. We trust that students will not take advantage of this flexibility and will wear the sports uniform correctly at all times. The trial will be monitored throughout the term and reviewed for Term 3 2024.

Autumn hazards on campus

As we embrace the beauty of the autumn season, we would like to remind everyone to exercise caution while navigating our campus grounds. With the changing foliage comes fallen tree nuts, leaves, and twigs, which can pose a trip hazard. Our dedicated Grounds team works diligently to clear these areas as often as possible. However, due to the constant falling of leaves and debris during this season, we kindly ask for your cooperation in staying vigilant and taking extra care.

To all the mothers and mother figures in our community, wishing you a restful and enjoyable day with loved ones on Sunday.

Community Planting

Last Saturday morning, a group of parents, students, teachers (and a few dogs!) took part in a community planting session on the eastern side of the College near the Year 12 car park. Due to the hard work of all the volunteers, we managed to transform an empty garden bed into a native garden with 45 plants. The plants are a mixture of marri trees, hakeas, banksias, grevilleas and kangaroo paws.

All the plants were chosen for the food they provide for the endangered Carnaby’s Cockatoo, which frequents the area around the College.

A special thanks to all the people who came along and gave up part of their Saturday morning to help.
