My UrbanArt

Our Year 9 My UrbanArt students are exploring the vibrant world of urban art through the design thinking process. This initiative has allowed them to investigate several key questions:

  • What is cultural style?
  • What are cultural messages?
  • How can I explore culture through my urban artworks?
  • How can I use the design thinking process to create an urban artwork?

As part of their investigation, students have been examining urban artworks across Melbourne, focusing on the unique styles and the cultural, social, and economic influences behind them. They have delved into the messages conveyed by these artworks and the contextual factors that shape them.

Urban Art often addresses social issues, politics, inequality, and activism, using public spaces to reach a broad audience. These art works often aim to engage with local communities, reflecting its values, history, or culture. It can also be used to revitalize urban spaces.

Our exploration has included iconic locations such as Hosier Lane, AC/DC Lane, Meyers Place, Presgrave Place, Mornane Place, Union Lane, Blender Lane, and the West Side Place Arcade. By studying these vibrant sites, students have gained insights into how urban artists utilise the design thinking process to create meaningful and impactful art.

This project not only enhances their understanding of urban art but also encourages them to think creatively and critically about cultural expression. We are proud of the enthusiasm and creativity our students have shown and look forward to seeing their unique urban art creations.

My City Planning

Our Year 9 My City Planning class has been working on a project aimed at addressing the need for more recreational facilities for teenagers in the City of Manningham.

Applying design thinking techniques, students researched the recreational needs of young people and watched an inspiring video the '40 Best Playgrounds in Australia' to help brainstorm ideas.

Students then tinkered with materials to prototype 3D models, bringing their designs to life. This hands-on activity not only fosters creativity and collaboration but also emphasizes sustainability.

We are incredibly proud of the detailed, comprehensive, and informative work our students have produced.
