Trade & Tech Fit career expo

On Thursday 9th May, Ms Ramsay and Ms Hull-Brown from our Careers department chaperoned a small group of Year 9 and Year 10 students to Trade and Tech Fit Expo at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre. The aim of this excursion was to broaden our female and gender diverse students’ study and career possibilities. This is an interactive expo, allowing students to design video games, lay bricks, weld, fly planes, program a robot, safety test equipment, use power tools, learn to paint and more while understanding more about the range of career options available to women and gender diverse people.

The Trade & Tech Fit career expo provides a safe and equitable space where students engage with tradies, apprentices and industry professionals, providing insight into the breadth of career pathways where female and gender diverse people are underrepresented.

Student reflections

I learned about aviation which I really like, and I enjoyed spending time at the Expo because I explored career options such as fire fighting, a pilot and construction. I am so happy that I tried this Expo, it has helped me. Now I have some good ideas about many different jobs. I loved this experience; it was so much fun!

- Helen, Year 10

I learned a lot from today. It's very helpful for our future and to learn more about VCE options and career paths in many areas. Our school's teachers were very organized and it's clear that they care about students. I am so glad that I attended this event. Not only did I get a lot of free stuff but I enjoyed the helpful career magazines and some DIY things. I look forward to more events like this.

- Zhuolin, Year 10

The Trade and Tech Fit Expo was one of the best and most wonderful events that I have been to! The way that they explained and instructed us about the different careers that women can pursue is amazing. The gifts and free stuff that we got were nice, and the interactive activities that we did were helpful. I really enjoyed it and I'm definitely coming back when I get the opportunity.

- Emeli, Year 10

We visited the Exhibition Centre today to discover potential jobs for women wanting to move into the Trades workforce. Some of the opportunities that I participated in were the jewellery stall, painting by number, learning how to put together attachments of a shower, and virtual reality. The best part of this experience for me was the photo booth, GIF creating, free coffees & hot chocolate, along with a free mini ice-cream cup and lollies. Overall, this was an amazing experience to help understand the Trades work force and to enjoy time with my friends.

- Yasmine, Year 9

Today we went to the Women in Trades Expo at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre. We were able to walk around and look at the different stalls. We were able to do activities like painting, brick laying and learning how to put plumbing pipes together. They also had fun competitions where you could win free stuff. I learned many new things about women in trades.

- Natasha, Year 9

Today we went to the Women in Trades Expo and it was a brilliant experience! It was super fun on the way there, the teachers took amazing care of us on the way to the Exhibition Centre. When we were there, we were able to try all sorts of things in trades. I made a jewellery holder out of wood, I used electric drills and I also got a FREE COFFEE :) So happy. I learned many things about women in trades, the roles available and how inclusive it is. A very enjoyable day.
