News from the Kitchen Vol.1

At Mortlake College, following the Victorian Curriculum, we are strongly focused on educating children about the importance of healthy eating. We use the Australian Dietary Guidelines to help develop our programs.

The Australian Dietary Guidelines and the Australian Guide to Healthy Eating provide up-to-date advice about the amounts and kinds of foods that we need to eat for health and wellbeing.

By following the dietary patterns recommended in the guidelines, we will get enough of the nutrients essential for good health and also help reduce our risk of chronic health problems such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, some cancers and obesity.

There are five principal recommendations featured in the Australian dietary guidelines. Each guideline is considered to be equally important in terms of public health outcomes.

  • Enjoy a wide variety of nutritious foods from the 5 food groups every day.
  • Drink plenty of water.
  • Limit the amount of food you eat that contains saturated fat, added salt, added sugars and alcohol.
  • Protect, support, and promote breastfeeding.
  • Be food safety aware.
