What's happening in Year 4/5/6 space?

꩜ Happy Week 3

The 4/5/6 learners have all continued to embrace their learning and should be acknowledged on another great week!

Investigations

The 4/5/6 learners have hit the ground running with their investigations. Their passion and enthusiasm for exploring the "100 languages" have allowed them to experiment with different ways of expressing themselves and their ideas, collaborating and having fun along the way!

Through the exploration of the 100 languages, learners are developing a deeper understanding of themselves, their strengths and challenges, as well as the world around them.

Literacy

We have been investigating all the ways we can power up our sentences.

We have used a variety of fiction and non fiction texts to explore the different ways authors begin their sentences, such as using words ending in 'ing' or locations to start our sentences in interesting ways.

This week, we began inquiring into the use of adjectives and adverbs and how these can be used to expand our ideas to create compound sentences.

Numeracy

To begin our Term, we have been reviewing the efficient strategies we can use when solving addition problems. We are building upon our existing knowledge of doubling and tens facts and applying these to our problem solving, improving our accuracy and fluency. These strategies are known as building ten to add and near doubles.

We have also introduced number talks into our Numeracy sessions. These talks have given learners the opportunity to clarify their ideas, identify what they do and do not understand, and learn from others when they hear how their peers think about and approach the problem.

Word Study

Our Word Study has focused on the /i/ phoneme, such as igloo and sister

We have explored the different ways this phoneme can look, such as women and syrup.

This week we began exploring the prefixes in, im, il and ir.

Such as in-visible, im-possible, il-legal and ir-responsible.

Learners have been using their agency to explore these spelling patterns through a range of experiences that improve their understanding of the pattern, increase their vocabulary and allow them to become more confident in discussing the meaning and structure of words.
