Middle Learning News

Hi Families,
As we approach Mother's Day we have been reflecting on the love we have for our mothers. We have also taken time to remember and honour our Anzacs in light of April 25th during the Year 2/3 space this fortnight.
Students connected with the emotional narratives of war in an age-appropriate way through the picture books Anzac Puppy and Anzac Ted. These texts fostered students' understanding of empathy and reverence for our soldiers.
On Friday afternoon, students joined the aged care residents to participate in an ANZAC ceremony. We applaud the patience and respect our students showed during this time.
Inquiry Projects
As mentioned in our last newsletter, Year 2/3 students engaged in self-led projects to teach others how to be successful learners. Students used technological skills to finalise their project into the form of a short video.
Some creations included
-Recipes for successful learning through a cooking show.
-The Bounce Football show, interviewing football players about how to be successful players.
-Gymnastic teachers guiding students.
-News reports
-Doctor creating medicine to enhance learning skills.
-The learning zoo
Students enjoyed the flexibility of the task. They displayed great amounts of collaboration and independence.
Mother’s Day
As we begin to delve into acknowledging the beautiful Mums in our life students created comparisons for their mother’s love.
Some examples were;
My mum’s love is like having sunscreen on a hot summer’s day.
My mum’s love is like having a warm comforting hug on a chilly winter’s day.
My mother’s love is like having an umbrella when you’re stuck in the pouring rain.
In addition to this children brainstormed adjectives to describe their mothers, some common findings were;
Loving, selfless, caring, courteous, comforting, and kind.
We look forward to creating something special for our Mum’s next week.
Addition and Subtraction
During mathematics we continue to practise using addition and subtraction to solve everyday problems. Students created charts to explain the meaning of these concepts and identified their synonyms. They have also begun to exchange strategies to solve some of these problems. An understanding of the connection between addition and subtraction is emerging. Students identified that addition is commutative (numbers can be swapped around without altering the result), but subtraction is not.
Students are consolidating their understanding of making ten, knowing doubles/near doubles and using counting on/back when needing to subtract or add 6 or less.
You may like to practise these with your child at home.
Well done to Ruby, Scout, Maison, Delilah and Lucas for their fabulous reading during today’s Mass.
Well done everyone on another great fortnight together.
Have a beautiful weekend.
