Year 5/6 excursion to Mars!

In Inquiry this term, our Year 5/6 students are focusing on the essential question;

'Why is there life on Earth but not on other planets'.

This unit is a scientific exploration of physics, biology, space, living things and habitats.

Toi kick this unit off, the students were lucky enough this week to visit Strathmore Secondary College to participate in the programs, 'Expedition to Mars' and 'Tickle my Droid' .

These programs deliver a scenario-based learning environment that engages the students in a wide range of science activities, uses computer and communications technology and strongly encourages collaborative learning and teamwork. It offers a rich experience in science and builds core skills.

The students loved the resources and fun, engaging learning experiences offered on this excursion and we look forward to them continuing to explore this rich area of learning.

Year 6 Market Day

On Friday 25th May our Year 6 students will be holding their annual Market Day at the school.

Market Day is a project that the Year Six students work on that has four aims;

  • to develop their leadership and organisation skills
  • to learn about financial literacy and build authentic concepts of supply and demand, profit, overheads and other entrepreneurial ideas.
  • to raise money for their yearbook and graduation
  • to help the rest of the school have fun

The students will work in groups and will each run a stall or activity on the day.

Students from other year levels are invited to attend Market Day and spend small amounts of money at the various market stalls. All of the money raised will go towards funding the Year 6 Graduation at the end of the year.

Each market stall will cost a student $1 - $3. Closer to the time, a notice will go home with further details about Market Day including the logistics of sending amount of gold coins to school to allow your child to participate.

In the meantime, the groups are asking for donations and support for their stalls - more details to follow in next week's newsletter.

Term Two Working Bee

Keeping our school looking great is a never ending job and one that is impossible to do without the helping hands of our community.

Please put Saturday 18th May in your diaries for our term two working bee.

We ask families to spare an hour or two between 9am and 1pm to come and help us keep the school clean, tidy and safe and complete a long list of minor jobs.

2025 Enrolments

Enrolments for Foundation for 2025 are now open and we encourage any families with children starting school next year to contact the school office to collect the correct forms. These can also be downloaded from https://www.skipps.vic.edu.au/community/enrolments/

As with last year, there is a statewide transition timeline which means that all Foundation applications must be submitted to the school by Friday 26th July in order to be guaranteed a place. We will notify families of the outcome of enrolment applications by Friday 9 August 2024.

We appreciate any families with younger siblings submitting their forms as soon as possible. This allows us to understand likely numbers for next year and so start to plan ahead for staff, class sizes, and our ability to offer places to families living outside our enrolment zone.

We are currently running regular school tours for prospective 2025 families. If you know of any relatives, friends or neighbours with a child starting school next year then please encourage them to book a tour at  https://compasstix.com/e/0rhar1rt70 to learn more about SKiPPS.
