Magnify

Magnify Sandhurst
It has been a busy 2 weeks in the classrooms as they implement Magnify across the Literacy and Mathematics Curriculum.
Foundation
Students in Foundation have been focussing on knowing the difference between words and letters, rhyming words and clapping out the syllables for words. As of next week, the Foundation students will be bringing home their Reader Bags that will contain a picture story book each night. We encourage parents to read this book with their child. The Reader Diary will outline what to do when reading with your child.
Grades 1/2
Students in Yr 1 and 2 have been using their white boards to participate in hearing sounds in words and spelling tricky words (high frequency words) such as February, were and friend. Students have learnt phrases such as
“Chin it” which means to show their work,
“Hover” which means to hide their work from others to see,
“Park it” means to place whiteboard on the floor and
“Bin it” which means to rub off and clean their white boards.
Students also have a Workbook that they complete set tasks each week.
Years 3-6
Students in Yr 3 to 6 have been assessed using the DIBELS (Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills), which is a set of procedures and measures for assessing the acquisition of literacy skills. They are designed to be short (one minute) fluency measures that can be used to regularly detect risk and monitor the development of early literacy and early reading skills.
Students in Years 3 and 4 have been reading the novel Matilda.
Students in Years 5 and 6 have been reading the novel War Horse.
Across the school, classes have also implemented Ochre which supports the Mathematics Curriculum from Foundation to Year 6 and the Literacy Curriculum from Yr 3 to Yr 6.
Foundation students have been learning about the days of the week and reading a timetable. Students have also played games to recognise numbers as picture or dots. They are also learning to count forwards and backwards from zero to 10.
Year 1s and 2s have been focussing on Number and Place Value. This has included counting, number formation, using MAB blocks to break a number into tens and ones and placing numbers on a number line. They have enjoyed viewing Presentation slides where they had to find a mistake in a given problem.
Years 3/4 have been exploring counting and Place Value such as what is 10 or 100 more or what is 10 or 100 less of a given number. They have also revised odd and even numbers.
Year 5/6 students have been exploring Data.
There was an interesting article in The Age about the use of Ochre in Victorian Catholic schools if you would like to read.
Melbourne Catholic schools reap the benefits of ‘back to basics’ overhaul.
