Deputy Principal's Report

Hello!
The past two weeks have been jam-packed with exciting events across our school! Our Year 6 students had an unforgettable time in Canberra for camp, we held PSG meetings that provided valuable insights and support for families and staff, and school tours welcomed prospective families eager to see our learning community in action.
PSG Meetings
Thank you to the families who have attended Program Support Meetings so far this year. It is so beneficial for us to meet as a team to discuss the best way to support your children in and out of the classroom. The lengths you all go to, to provide the best opportunities for your children is heartwarming. Andrea and I look forward to meeting with the remaining families in the coming weeks.
Year 6 Camp
In Week 3, our Year 6 leaders embarked on a 4 night camp in Canberra in which we were lucky enough to also attend alongside the amazing Year 6 teaching staff. Firstly, we would like to recognise the amazing support you, as parents, provided in preparing your children for camp, as well as thank the teachers for their round-the-clock support and supervision.
Some highlights included:
- Questacon
- National Gallery of Australia
- Mount Ainslie Lookout
- National Arboretum of Canberra
- Electoral Education Centre
- Museum of Democracy
- Australian War Memorial
- National Dinosaur Meseum
- Parliament House
- Royal Australian Mint
Helping Your Child Make New Friends This School Year
The start of a new school year is an exciting time, but it can also be daunting for children as they navigate new friendships. As parents, you play a key role in helping your child feel confident and connected. Here are some simple strategies to support them:
Encourage Conversations About Friendship
Talk with your child about what makes a good friend—kindness, listening, and including others. Encourage them to introduce themselves to new classmates and ask open-ended questions like, “What do you like to do at recess?”
Arrange Playdates and Meet-ups
If possible, organise playdates with classmates outside of school. A visit to Brighton Beach, Dendy Park, or a local café can provide a relaxed setting for friendships to grow.
Get Involved in School and Community Activities
Joining extracurricular activities like sports teams, drama clubs, or Scouts helps children meet peers with shared interests. Keep an eye out for local activities through school newsletters or the Bayside Council website.
Teach Social Skills Through Role-Playing
Practising greetings, taking turns in conversation, and handling disagreements in a positive way can give your child confidence in social settings.
- Model Friendly Behaviour Children learn from watching you! Show them how to introduce yourself, start conversations, and include others—whether at school pick-up or community events.
Keep Communication Open Ask your child about their day and listen for any friendship challenges they may be facing. If they express concerns, reassure them that making friends takes time and that everyone feels nervous at first.
By creating opportunities for connection and reinforcing positive social habits, we can work together to build lasting friendships and start the school year with confidence. We look forward to working together with you!
Have a great week!
