Welcome to Term 3 in the Monivae College Library.

Late in Term 2 we welcomed a new Library Assistant, Mrs Emma McGregor.  Emma is settling into her new role with ease and grace.  Being a long-term ‘local’, she has ‘relationship’ already with some of our students, she is full of ideas and inspiration. Already, after only a few short weeks, she is building a wonderful rapport with our students.  Emma is an avid reader, she understands and promotes the myriad of benefits that come to us as regular readers.  Never underestimate the power of reading for pleasure.

Welcome Emma.

“When discussing the benefits of reading aloud, the most significant one cannot be overlooked: the impact it has upon language and vocabulary development.  Barone, Fougere, and Martel (2024) found that children who were read aloud to showed measurable improvement in their receptive vocabulary gains, which persisted even six months after the trial ended.  They also noted that the benefits were quite strong for those from disadvantaged families, as well as boys.  Written language is more complex that the spoken word.  Exposure to new sentence structures and vocabulary builds a child’s own vocabulary and deepens their understanding of language and how it works.  This in turn allows students to learn new grammar patterns, unfamiliar vocabulary and sophisticated ways of expressing new ideas.  (Beck and McKeown, 2001).”

On Wednesday, 15 July, 23 very keen Chess students left school early to compete in an interschool tournament at Emmanuel College in Warrnambool.
