Shrove Tuesday - Tuesday 17 February

Next Tuesday 17 February is Shrove Tuesday. As has occurred in past years, children will be enjoying pancakes at school. Everything will be provided by the teachers. As it will be a very small portion students will still need their regular recess and lunch.

For any children who have food allergies, please organise a small alternative snack for these children to enjoy.

Ash Wednesday - Wednesday 18 February

Ash Wednesday is an important Christian holy day that marks the beginning of Lent, a season of preparation before Easter.

What the ashes mean:

  • Repentance — saying sorry for sins and wanting to change
  • Mortality — reminding people that life is precious (“Remember you are dust…”)
  • Humility — turning back to God with a sincere heart

The ashes are usually made by burning palm leaves from the previous year’s Palm Sunday. Sacred Heart students will attend this day of Holy Obligation next Wednesday 18 February at 9:15am. Parents and friends are warmly invited to attend.

Zones of Regulation

At Sacred Heart Kew, all classes implement strategies from The Zones of Regulation framework to support our students in managing their emotions.

What is it?

The Zones of Regulation is a framework centred around helping students gain skills in consciously regulating their actions and emotions, which in turn leads to increased control and problem solving abilities.

What are the aims of Zones of Regulation?

  • assist students with their self-regulation
  • helps teach students to recognise and manage their emotions based on:
  • the environment
  • its demands
  • the people in it

How does it work?

Zones of Regulation uses four colours to represent the four zones, blue, green, yellow and red. These colour zones help students identify how they are feeling in the moment given:

• their emotions

• their level of alertness

• noticing their body signals

• detecting triggers

• reading social context

• considering how their behaviour impacts on others
