WELCOME BACK

Welcome back to the school year and the library page.

Students have been eagerly sharing holiday stories. Many have visited the town library and or art gallery and found time on those hot days to cool off with a book.

The holiday reads have been steadily pouring in with many more to come, so please assist your child in locating and returning their 2025 borrows.

THE LIBRARY... MORE THAN BOOKS

"The library is not just full of books, but also opportunities."

Abbey 2016

Over the term you will read about all that our school library can offer your child.

This week: Our St Nicholas School Library offers a safe, comfortable and calm space for your child to visit on a regular basis. The library is open every morning before school, every first break and some 2nd breaks too.

Students are welcome to wander in and out, coming in from the playground as they please.

They may choose to read, draw, engage with the technology (with supervision), play games, complete jigsaws or engage in any other organised activity.

2026 FOCUS

A strong focus this year will be on the regular borrowing and returning of books. A student in Yrs 4, 5 or 6 may not borrow every week due to the number of books borrowed. Students in Kinder, Yr 1, Yr 2 and Yr 3 will be expected to borrow and return each week.

Please see the grade timetable below so that you can assist your child in being prepared for their library lesson.

MONDAY: Yr 1, Yr 5

TUESDAY: Yr 2, Yr 4

WEDNESDAY: Kindergarten, Yr 3

THURSDAY: Yr 6

                                                                        LIBRARY BAGS

Please note a LIBRARY BAG is the first item on your child's equipment list for the year.

Thank you for ensuring your child has a library bag. I have some spares and will issue these to students next week who have not yet presented with a bag.

LIBRARY BAGS MATTER...  Not just some of the time but all of the time.

No food or drink on my books.

Food and drink are for the chooks.

Library bags keep ‘em clean.

Books are cool don’t treat ‘em mean.

Bring your bag every time.

Fill it up and get in line.

Have it scanned and scoot on out.

LIBRARY BAGS

We all shout.

PREMIER'S READING CHALLENGE

All students, except for kindergarten, have borrowed this week with these books going towards the tally to complete the NSW Premier"s Reading Challenge.

Students from Yr 3 - Yr 6 will have their books recorded on the Oliver library program.

Kinder, 1 and 2 use the paper reading log which is to remain in the library bag.

The aim of the Challenge is to promote a love of literature for enjoyment and to encourage wide reading amongst the students. This is done by restricting how many series books can be logged as PRC (Premier's Reading Challenge), thus moving students out of their comfort zone to read other genres or texts, essentially  by other authors promoting wide reading.

The students will be presented to the school community at our next Friday assembly.

CHOICE = Motivation

"The strongest positive impact on reading engagement and learning gains comes from student self-selection of reading materials. "

When students visit the library a huge emphasis is placed on the
