Maths News

Earlier this year, while some of our Year 5 students focused on improving their confidence with mathematical strategies, others applied these strategies to solve various mathematical problems, as they participated in the Junior Maths Game program, organised by APSMO (the Australasian Problem-Solving Mathematical Olympiads).

The Junior Maths Games program provides an opportunity for mainstream students in Years 5 and 6 to learn valuable problem-solving skills and exposes them to the application of mathematical problem-solving strategies and techniques. The Maths Games is aligned with the Australian curriculum and focuses on challenging students to think laterally and creatively when solving mathematically-based problems. It is grounded in the ‘real-world’ application of problem solving strategies and highlights the fact that there may be multiple ways to reach a solution.

The main aims of the program are to:

  • Introduce mainstream students to important mathematical concepts.
  • Teach major strategies and develop flexibility for problem solving.
  • Foster creativity and ingenuity and strengthen intuition.
  • Stimulate enthusiasm and enjoyment of mathematics.
  • Provide for the satisfaction, joy and thrill of meeting challenges.

Our school’s top scorers in the competition were: Ben L., Jimmy M., Kiaan N. and Yoni F.

Yoni F. scored 20 out of 20 throughout the competition – full marks!

Special encouragement “Maths Star” awards were also presented to: Ollie A., Saffronrose H., Jakob J., Harvey J. and Charlie C.

How would you solve some of these problems?
