Main Campus - Year 4

This Term the year 4 students are studying different Biomes (a biome is an area classified according to the species that live in that location). They are learning about Rainforests, Deserts, Oceans, Grasslands, Tundra & Savanna. The students have compared the continents of Africa and South America with Australia, focusing on the different environments, animals, and landmarks of each continent. They presented their findings using maps, tables, and summaries of their research. The students have also researched Kati Thanda Lake Eyre. They chose to write a description about the lake or a diary of an animal migrating or living at the lake.

Here is an exemplary piece of writing from Lucy CU3:

Diary of a Pelican: Kati Thanda Lake Eyre

Dear diary, don't worry, it's only me. Today I had to fly for sooooo long. I had to fly for like five miles. Anyway, mum said we would fly even longer tomorrow. I Don't even know where we're going! Anyway, we were flying over a desert, and it was soooo hot, and tomorrow mum said it'll be hotter! At least it's cool at night. We’re roosting on a big tree with lots of shade, in the middle of the desert. We have only been away from home for one day but I still miss the cool, blue ocean tickling my feet. We live on a beach in Victoria, but every couple of years we migrate. But this year it's different. We’re migrating somewhere else, but mum wants it to be a surprise, so she won't tell me. Well, I've got to go to bed now, goodnight!

Hey diary, it’s me again, we’re just about to continue our journey so I can’t chat for long. We are going to be flying for about 7 miles and It's going to be over 30 degrees!  That's hot considering where I come from. Mum said the place we're going to be very warm, but she said it has water, so we'll be able to swim. We've got to start flying, so I'll see you tonight. Bye.

Hi, I'm back, today I was flying in such hot weather, I actually fainted midair. But luckily my friend Bobby came to the rescue and brought me to land and woke me up. Then we were on our way again. we're at a very small tree, which is annoying, because some of us have to sleep on the ground, including me. Tomorrow is our last full day of flying, which is so good because I really don't want to faint again and be embarrassed all over again. Anyway, Bobby and I have to go to bed now because we're the youngest. Night now.

Dearest diary, we completed our last full day of travelling, which is super relieving. And I didn't faint!  We hadto fly for half an hour to an hour tomorrow before we are there, but that's not that long. Mum still hasn't told me where we're going which is annoying because I don't want to keep flying if I don't even know where we're going! I mean, I do like a good surprise. Goodnight diary, see you tomorrow.

I'm so excited! We only have around 45 minutes of flying today, which is so relieving! And guess what? Me and Bobby get to fly by ourselves the whole way, because the rest of our flock is leaving early, but we like to sleep in. Don't worry, our mums told us the way.

Dear diary, you won't believe where we are! It's amazing. Mum calls it Kati Thanda Lake Eyre. It's so pretty and it's so refreshing to swim in it! The cool water lapping at my feet is just like the beach where we live. The water is very cold but refreshing at the same time. There is so much wildlife! It's paradise. And we get to stay until the lake dries, which hopefully will be a long time.
