Senior Unit - 5/6

What’s been happening in the Senior Unit lately….

Year 6 Graduation

The Year 6s have been busy practicing their dance class for their graduation ceremony. A massive thanks to Janelle who has been organising this! The students are going to be practising this over the next couple of weeks and it’s already looking fantastic. Just a reminder that payment for the graduation dinner is due and can be paid via Qkr.

Reading

In Reading over the last week students have been completing an Independent Literacy Work Grid with reading activities. Some examples of the activities include creating a new character to insert into a story they have read or creating a radio advertisement for a book they have enjoyed.

The students also had a chance to view books for sale during the Book Fair. They were really impressed with the selection of books that were there for offer!

Writing

Students have been planning, drafting and revising a Mystery narrative. Most students are up to the publishing stage of the story and they have used feedback from peers and teachers to revise their work.

“I like figuring out who I was going to put as the person who committed the crime! - Grace

“I enjoyed making the plot and describing the different scenes and emotions - Zahra

Mathematics

In Maths, the students have been learning about adding decimal numbers by looking into money and change. We have also created financial plans where the students are creating a charity and a financial plan to work out what apparel they need to sell to make a profit for their organisation. We have discussed budgets, expenses, profits and debt.

“I enjoyed making the logos and working out what items would fit well with our charity. “ - Mia

“I like the part where we worked out what items we were going to sell and how much money we would make for the charity” - Emily

Science

For Science over the last two weeks we have been exploring the planets and the dwarf planets in our solar system.

Some comments about our space unit so far from SU4:

“I have enjoyed learning about all the dwarf planets and why they are dwarf planets” - Zoe

“A dwarf planet has to be a certain size, be in its own orbit and has to revolve around a star” - Rohan

“I have enjoyed learning about different planets and places in the galaxy” - Riley
