From the Principal

Dear Parents and Friends,
I hope everyone has enjoyed the brilliant weather we've had over the last week, it would seem that spring is here early, although not today! I love spring, it's perfect weather for being outside which is my happy place. I've been enjoying playing tennis and doing some hiking, and this weather certainly makes it more enjoyable.
Next week is book week and whilst we can't wait to see everyone dressed up on Monday, we will also be using Facebook to share some information about how we teach reading at Lysterfield Primary School. The videos will involve staff and students reflecting on what we do and sharing their passion for teaching and learning.
📚 Book Week – Celebrating Reading and Learning
Next week is Book Week – a time to celebrate the joy of reading, the power of stories, and the importance of strong literacy skills for every child. This year, we are adding something extra special for our families.
Throughout the week, we will be releasing a series of short videos on our Lysterfield Primary School Facebook page. These will give you an inside look at the changes we’ve made to the way we teach, and the difference it’s making for our students.
🎥 What’s in the Videos?
👩🏫 Our Journey of Change
Hear from school leaders about why we've increased the amount of Explicit Instruction – a clear, structured, and highly effective approach to teaching, that ensures every child receives the same high-quality learning every day.
✏️ Daily Word Work & Daily Review
Teachers will explain how:
- Daily Word Work builds spelling, vocabulary, and reading accuracy
Daily Review helps students practise and remember what they’ve learned so knowledge really sticks
📖 Knowledge Rich & Literature Units
Hear how:
- Knowledge-rich units give students the background knowledge to understand the world
Literature Units immerse them in high-quality texts that spark discussion, imagination, and a love of reading
🎤 Student Voices
Listen to our students share what they love about the way we teach reading – and how it’s helping them succeed.
💡 Why We’re Sharing This
We want you to see not just what we teach, but why we teach it this way and the incredible progress it’s bringing. These videos are a chance to celebrate our teachers, our students, and the positive culture we are building together.
📅 How to Watch
✔ Follow our Facebook page: Lysterfield Primary School
✔ Look out for video posts during Book Week
✔ Watch with your child and talk about what they are learning
Let’s make Book Week a celebration of reading, learning, and community pride. You won’t want to miss it!
In line with our SunSmart policy, hats are to be worn from mid-August. Next week will be the last week of no hats. From Monday 25/8, all students will be expected to wear a hat for:
- Recess and lunch play
- Year-level sport
- Excursions and camps
- Interschool sport
Students who do not have a hat will be unable to participate in these activities; as such, we encourage you to check where your child's hat is and grab a new one if necessary.
Have a great weekend,
Adam Wight, Principal
